Dreamgirls is the WORST movie ever created

How this movie was nominated for oscars is amazing to me. Every time a plot change came up it was another 2 minutes of agonizing music. Eddie Murphy was kind of funny doing his best James Brown but most of the songs were really tedious. If anyone has a favorite musical please let me know so this genre can be redeemed.

Umbrellas of Cherbourg Moulin Rouge Blues Brothers

Cop Rock never made it to the big screen.

At the risk of sounding cliche... Rocky Horror Picture Show (film - thrilling, when you're a 15-year-old goth chick) Guys & Dolls (film - Frankie & Marlon, yum!) The Music Man (film - if only to see little Ronnie Cunningham lisping his way through The Wells Fargo Wagon)

Singing In The Rain Little Shop Of Horrors West Side Story Oklahoma (I like Rodgers and Hammerstein quite a bit, actually) *I'm hoping Tim Burton's impending film adaptation of Sondheim'sSweeney Todd kicks as much ass as the musical does. Nobody dislikes Andrew Lloyd Webber As Much as MF DU does...

Definitely "Singing In the Rain." I also like the original "Shall We Dance," with Fred and Ginger tap-dancing on roller-skates to the Gershwins' music.

The real tragedy of this post was that I misead everything and immediately thought... "Showgirls was nominated for an Academy Award?"

Ditto on Umbrellas of Cherbourg! Add in two more from Jacques Demy and Catherine Deneuve: Young Girls of Rochefort and Donkey Skin. Does the Muppet Movie count as a musical? Because that was awesome. Awesomely bad musicals: The Apple The Fantasticks Hair Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Can't Stop the Music

I rented it when Chippy was out-of-town. I didn't think it was that bad. The acting was a little bit sub-par, with the exception of Jennifer Hudson, who was a STAR.

I can't believe no one's mentioned Grease--a truly fantastic work of art. If you get me drunk enough I might even be able to recall my arguments for the subversive nature of the film (something about only Rizzo never compromises, and she still gets Knickie at the end...)

Et tu, Virtue? I'm sorry, but Grease is a steaming pile of donkey dung. PS - x

Umbrellas of Cherbourg sounds interesting I thought Annie was decent when I was 13. Pink Floyd The Wall was cool. Little Shop of Horrors was good. I would still like to see Quadraphenia. Everyone has been talking about High School Musical. So I guess musicals are still going strong.

We'll have to agree to disagree then. Are we counting rock n roll highschool as musical, or just a good flick with an awesome soundtrack?

Posted by pamsterdam on 2007-08-23 09:33:54 +0000
The Huzb agrees with you. He's always had the hots for that chick. Is it Olivia Newton John? Wasn't she in Zanadu too?

Umbrellas of Cherbourg = one of the greatest movies ever made. Very highly recommended.

Ditto.

"HMS Pinafore" "42nd Street" "Li'l Abner" "Damn Yankees" "Sugar" "Tommy" "Fiddler on the Roof" I'm a huge "Guys and Dolls" and "Shoppe of Horrors" fan. I really want to see "Wicked" and "Spamalot".

HMS Pinafore was pretty funny. I added Umbrellas of Cherbourg to my Blockbuster list.

Xanadu.... *swoons* tommy, I have a copy of it, just in case you want to have a backyard movie that includes rollerskating laser-trail-leaving muses. (and O. N. John). It truly is a trip.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Musical Episode ditto: Little Shop of Horrors The Pajama Game Idlewild...saw it recently and was blown away by the whole thing

Xanadu is something else alright. Gene Kelly and ELO!

Posted by cdubrocker on 2007-08-24 06:10:09 +0000
Pajama Game = wonderful, though never seen the movie.

Posted by pchippy on 2007-08-24 06:22:05 +0000
Don't know whether you'd call it a musical or an opera (it's been presented both ways) but "Candide" is one of the very best of either form.

I was in that and The Fantasticks in college. Accidentally got big roles in both. Always one for over-extending myself! Best song in Pajama Game: Hernando's Hideaway. I had a duet, but only about 3 words in it. Kind of lame. Love the labor union theme...and that it's about a completely sexist work environment in the 50s.

Posted by cdubrocker on 2007-08-24 10:06:03 +0000
I was in the pit orchestra for Pajama Game. Great fun. Seven and a half cents...

Posted by Miriam on 2007-08-24 11:21:43 +0000
...doesn't buy a helluva lot.

Posted by MF DU on 2007-08-25 02:08:20 +0000
I knew I forgot some. Thanks, Conor. 'Spamalot' and 'Urinetown' are both pretty good.

Avenue Q is pretty fantastic...but I don't think it's on film yet.
