A gem.
Instead, she wore a red silk dress similar to the one on the album cover, stood on top of a spotlight, a huge buffont wig (ala Amy Winehouse), fake nails and tons of makeup. She didn't play any instruments and she hardly moved-- just some flittery hand motions.
Later, she said to Dazed and Confused magazine:
<i>"That was kind of a mask. It was much more of a mask than I’ve ever had. I was very lost as a person, at that point. I had no sense of self left at all," </i>
I think I hadn't heard the whole album when I went to the show, I had only heard "Down by the water" on the radio a ton. I hated that song-- what the fuck is that "little fish" crap? What happened to "big black monsoon"? What happened to the DIY of '4-track demos'? The show was just boooo-ring, and she was lame. And I hated the album, from cover to cover when I heard it-- so I dropped PJ like a saturated tampon.
Listening to the album over 10 years later, there are some great tracks. "Send his love to me" and "Working for the Man" are really spectacular, despite the fact that they don't rock as hard as "50 foot Queenie". I think I understand more about what she was trying to accomplish, which I couldn't have in 1995. And although I still can't stand those fucking fish, Radiohead can be forgiven for making 'Creep", can't they?
Because I dropped her after this album, I haven't listened to any of the rest-- bring 'em on.
