Week 1 Suicide picks

The Gecko picks the Colts for this week. (Other picks to be recorded later).

Posted by respectless on 2007-09-06 02:57:49 +0000
The Bronze Greek picks the Denver Broncos for week 1.

Posted by mahatma chani on 2007-09-06 04:04:34 +0000
Respectless: are you "The Bronze Greek?" Or is that somebody else? The Gecko is an actual member of the board (just a lurker so far).

Posted by tgl on 2007-09-06 05:27:00 +0000
Will this be one pick a week, or one pick a week for the entire season? Or put another way: Do you decide the season up front or week by week?

Posted by respectless on 2007-09-06 05:37:37 +0000
yes i am, sorta. it was a joke. so, it is my pick.

Posted by mahatma chani on 2007-09-06 05:37:44 +0000
One pick a week. If your pick loses, you're out of the contest. If your pick wins, you pick a any other team than your week 1 pick to win week 2. Week 3, any other team than your weeks 1 and 2 picks to win week 3. Etc. Last man standing wins the pot. Simple as that. $20. You in?

Strategy hints? Maybe look to choose a weak team early?

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-09-06 05:59:48 +0000
Kevin Youkilis is gonna KICK YOUR ASS.

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-09-06 06:01:34 +0000
I'm pickin' Steelers.

Posted by mahatma chani on 2007-09-06 06:33:18 +0000
I've talked about strategy with some people who are in the pool: emitime, my Dad, Abe, etc. The consensus seems to be pick sure things, even burn a few "guaranteed winners" at the season's opener, until we're in the middlish section of the season when the wheat from the chaff is separated and emerging teams present themselves. Although Dad pointed out that the Vegas lines (which are being ignored in this contest, by the way) listed virtually every game this week as "a draw." So Week 1 seems to be the hardest one. Two more points: Once all picks are in, I will repost again them in this thread. Also, there's no reason you have to cast your vote this early unless you're picking the Colts or Saints.

and agganis is gonna kick boston's.

Alvan Long is also picking the Colts.

Colts lose tonite, and go 9-7 this year...

Posted by tgl on 2007-09-06 14:38:20 +0000
Just now figured out that your picks are not mutually exclusive with the rest of the field. Colts-Saints are tied at 7. Is it still too late to go in 9 (but not on the IND-NO game)?

Posted by tgl on 2007-09-06 14:40:26 +0000
Seattle. I'm good for the dough, I swear.

Posted by mahatma chani on 2007-09-07 01:10:37 +0000
Got it, TGL... Just waiting on Corby's, MF DU's, That Girl From Jaws 2's, Pleiman's, Kinkopf's and then we're all in. Unless somebody else is joining? (We're at 15 right now).

Dude, I'm going to make 280 clams! So... what's stopping someone from picking exactly like me for the entire season? I don't want to split my winnings. I guess I could use a less public picking method. Although, the posting of the picks here is appreciated. Then we can make fun of each other.

Posted by MF DU on 2007-09-07 02:53:21 +0000
sorry for the delay. in todays mail. I promise. BTW: Since I am always riding Albini's jock, my pick this week is Chicago. Insert SNL reference here ____________.

There's nothing stopping anybody from picking just like you for the whole season. Right now, there's only one other person picking the 'Hawks. Now, me on the other hand... MF DU: Ballsy pick.

Posted by emitime on 2007-09-07 05:05:23 +0000
good pick.

The picks (Waiting still on Corby Trouser Press's, Joe Pleiman's, and Abe Kinkopf's... probably won't post the last three before kickoff, depends if the new laptop's up and running; but it will be recorded) are: mahatma chani, Epoisses, emitime, and Bill Quigley all picked the Steelers. tgl and Dave Pelino both picked the Seahawks. MF DU picked Da Bears. jbcardinale picked the Jaguars. That Girl From Jaws 2 picked the Lions. respectless picked the Broncos. The Gecko and Alvan Long both picked the Colts and advance to Week 2.

Posted by tgl on 2007-09-08 12:39:39 +0000
Picking the Colts is like invading Iraq. Sure you can take Baghdad, but what are you going to do in Week 2? Let's go 'Hawks! (I'm in decent company).

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-09-09 10:55:13 +0000
I want you all to lose so I can win the pool, but man, I'm pulling for MF DU right now -- 3-0 CHI, 6:09 3rd.

You and yr. Broncos died early, just like Agganis.

Posted by tgl on 2007-09-09 11:22:00 +0000
...Broncos kicked a last second (literally) field goal to beat the Bills, 15-14. The BG lives for another week.

Cory and JB: Mike Francessa of "Mike and the Mad Dog" picked the Jaguars as well.
