My first fall show is apparently also my last.
In the midst of my super bad day yesterday I got a call from the WMUA program director bumping me from the lineup after this evening's 9/13/2007 broadcast.
Something about a returning student with seniority. Being a relative newbie to WMUA and a 'community' member to boot, I dont think it wise to make a big stink about it, especially if I want to build a long term relationship / listenership there.
The End Of Radio indeed.
Epoisses and DÜ: pulling out all the stops tonight!

Podcast? Livecast? Youtube?

Community members versus students was always a touchy subject in the halls of WCBN.

If I wasn't having my son's birthday cake tonight, I'd make the trek out there. I'd bet that you'll be on the air before too long. Better days ahead....
Live streaming! Thanks for giving me something entertaining to listen to while I get ready for my journey to Brussels at the "crack of Christ" local time.
(Who coined that term?)

The live stream doesn't work for me. So, I couldn't have listened anway. WMUA.org, worst online experience ever.
Sucka MCs!

I miscalculated the time difference, tuned in at 03:55 my time and caught the last (Minutemen) song, a bunch of PSAs, some dead air, and the kid who comes on after DU. Argh!

You missed our shoutout.

So apparently the status of my show is repaired - Thursdays it is as I had originally thought.
Only thing I have to say is that I'm glad I'm not the programming director having to call a bunch of grumpy record collectors to tell them no more show. Tough gig.
Guest spots on 'End of Radio' still avail - RSN'ers book yours now!

I know it sounds perverse, but I am glad TGL and Tommy let me know they had trouble with the online interface.
Maybe an opportunity for the DÜ to work with the tech guys and learn more about how this works to increase listenership and promote future podcasting?
Many issues here as far as I'm concerened:
1. Why are there like 4 clicks of the mouse once you are on wmua.org to find the stream (a few involving being routed to another different looking website?)
2. why is 'Realplayer' the only game in town for WMUA? No winamp? Itunes? This is 2007... Lots of people's employers restrict certain specific audio streams so having it in various formats would help to reach a wider audience.
3. popup GUI interface of the stream is also awkward adn not pretty to look at if indeed you meet with success in streaming.
4. If you only have one application / stream - then internet streaming is down, down, down if something happens to the one.

RE: 1. Yeah. Baffling. There should be a link to a streaming protocol right at the top. Not to keep returning to http://www.wcbn.org, but, they've got four different formats available at the top-level page.
RE: 2. MP3 is a must. I'd argue that Ogg Vorbis is as well. Both have open source streaming architectures.
RE: 3. Death to pop-ups.
RE: 4. Redundancy is nice.

1,2,3,4) WMUA's streaming is "provided as a courtesy of masslive.com". Masslive.com appears to be the Springfield Republican's web "portal".
I'm sure the bosses at the Republican hired some consulting company at great expense to give them a streaming "solution" to help them with their "branding" on this new internet thing the kids are using these days. And, what they got was realplayer with popups, which they grafted onto their already-clunky masslive.com site.
UMA has a CS department, no? Can't they find a kid that could set up a decent streaming operation in 3 hours in exchange for a Star Trek DVD or something?
I've never read this paper but I hate them already for being so ashamed of Springfield that they wish to be known as the "Republican" and not the "Springfield Republican". Ditto the "Item" (Lynn) and "Eagle-Tribune" (Lawrence). Goddamn it, even their fucking newspapers have turned their backs on these cities.

On air jitters - no idea why I was adding the article before the band's name.
At first I thought it was just a playlist error (the playlist software is almost as challenged as the streaming app), but you can hear me on the podcast: "The Wire" (sic). D'oh!
So I watch too much TV... there are worse things I suppose ;)

Just heard it, via podcast! Wheeee!
Thanks, Epoisses & DU - that was heartwarming. I'm such a sucker for shoutouts...

Subject: New Internet Audio Stream
Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to inform everyone of our new internet stream. We are now streaming in an MP3 format so that it is accessible using Windows Media Player, Winamp, iTunes or virtually any other application that can be used to listen to music. Additionally the new stream is higher quality and will let us monitor listener statistics more accurately.
Since it’s a new system I’m expecting some issues to come up with it that will need to be taken care of. If you or your listeners notice any problems or have questions please email me to let me know.
Links to the new stream are on the front page and the webcast page on www.wmua.org
All questions, comments, complaints, etc are welcome.
Jeff Cleveland
Tech Director
