2007 RIOT thread

Red Sox just need to play .500 baseball to clinch a playoff spot, even if Yanks run the table. Things look good.

Tigers 4 wins away, Mariners 6 to avoid elimination. Both have 66 loses. Orioles won't be winning the division, and Tampa Bay is done.

if you build it, they will come.

BOSOX remaining schedule: TB (3) TOR (3) NYY (3) TB (3) OAK (2) MIN (4) ... I could see them needing a split with the Twins in order to make it: Getting swept by the MFY and Oakland, while only taking 2/3 from TB and TOR.

chortle inducing

Tigers need 4 wins to avoid being eliminated from the playoffs. Mariners would seem to be out of it. Those dirty Birds, the Orioles, are eliminated from the playoffs.

In the AL, there are 4 teams that control their own destiny at this point. That's pretty much a lock, I think. In the NL, there are 8! teams that control their own destiny. Fabulous! Let's go Rockies!

Dodgers!

6-9 in the last 15 games clinches for the Sox.

1 game ahead in the loss column? Unless the get their ass's in gear, heading into the playoffs playing like crap, the Sox won't win the first series, regardless if it's the Indians of the Angels. Becket need a big game Friday....

The RIOT stats are fascinating today. In the AL, there are four teams that have clinched a playoff spot. However, there are two other teams that have not been eliminated yet. The Tigers and Mariners can still win all of their remaining games, and if the MFY lose all of theirs, there could be as much as a three way tie for the Wild Card. In the NL, however, there are still no clinches, and, better yet, there are 5 teams that control their own destiny and 9 teams that aren't eliminated yet. There will most likely be a NL spot decided on the last day of the season.

I look at those RIOT #'s a lot. Totally not trying to be a nudnick here or anything, but why is RIOT better than just hitting the 'standings' tab on mlb.com? I think we have probably been over this before, but , I cant seem to explain this well to my cubemates or myself for that matter...

RIOT factors in head to head matchups. It doesn't really matter in the current races, because none of the contending teams seem to be playing one another. Consider, though, the NL wild card race. Right now there is a tie, and both the Pads and the Phillies have 6 games left, so their RIOT number for the playoffs is 6. However, if three of their games were against each other, it would be 5, since neither team could win 5 without the other losing 2. That's all. It's much more interesting and complicated if there are several teams that are close and all playing each other.

Still no clinches in the NL.

More importantly, there are still 5 teams in the NL that Control Their Own Destiny. DU, this is where RIOT gets interesting. See the Rockies, in third place in the NL West. Also, see how they are tied for two back in the NL Wild Card. Note that they play their final 3 games against their division leading D-Backs. If they win the rest of their games, they will have 90 wins _and_ the D-Backs will have 3 losses. So the best the D-Backs can do in that case is also 90 wins. If the Pads win the rest of their games, the D-Backs and the Rockies will be tied for the Wild Card (potentially with the Phillies, if they win all of their games, too) and the Pads will have the division. I'm pulling for all 4 teams to have the same record for some interesting pre-playoff playoffs.

The contention for the AL best record is also interesting. Cleveland has 6 games in the next 5 days, including a day-nighter today. Note, Cleveland's "day game" is at 7:05 ET, because it's in Seattle, but also note that it's a home game, because it's a makeup from the snowed out series in April.

1 Tied for best record in MLB w/ the Indians. Either way you slice it, the Sox play the Angels 1st... Damn.

Posted by tgl on 2007-09-27 03:25:07 +0000
Tigers lose and are eliminated.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2007-09-27 04:58:00 +0000
(and the MFY won, so they would have been anyway)

Posted by tendiamonds on 2007-09-27 04:58:41 +0000
Angels could still end up with a better record than Cleveland. They have 3 games left and are 2 games back.

Let's all pull together and pool our wishes for a five way tie.

The 9-15 Beer Canyon coughs up the NL Central to the Cubs tonight. If it can't be the Sox, then the Cubs. But *NOT* Sox vs. Cubs.

My pants remain unsoiled for another year. My rooting interests now: 1) Not the Yankees 2) Padres 3) Cleveland 4) Philly 5) Sox 6) Cubs 7) Los Angeles of Anaheim 8) Rockies 9) Mets [Arizona left as an exercise for the reader]

Alright Rockies! Win 13 of your last 14 games to force a playoff... Take it all the way.
