One of the umpteen times I saw They Might Be Giants, Brian Dewan opened up the show. A strange dude who played these anti-folk songs on a zither. Might be worth another look.

He's the founder of Dewantatron, which includes more experimental music nerd bleeps and bloops and homemade weird than you can shake a stick at.
for example:
The Melody Gin is a quartet of oscillators, each of which can influence the other and create idiosyncratic contours, yielding melody and rhythm. The up and down patterns of varying degrees of influence act upon external oscillators, determining their song. The controlling quartet not only mills a melodic contour but also shifts modulation patterns and creates asymmetrical rhythmic shapes.
or
"The wall Gin"
he wall mounted melody gin, or Wall Gin, whiles the minutes away with a musical utterance every once in a while.
The village clock chimes the hour, but the wall gin keeps irregular hours, the ever-changing length of respite between sounds is determined by the wall gin's built-in electronic arbitration system.
And the more, the merrier - a roomful of wall gins in operation is as contrapuntal as a morningful of birdsong. So forget about keeping track of time and let the wall gins whistle while you work.
