Wildlife

Yesterday morning, as I drove to work, I rounded the corner at a busy intersection, barely missing a WILD TURKEY crossing the road. Luckily all traffic missed it without bottlenecking or causing an accident. At first I thought it was just another black buzzard, but it walked more like a duck and had an elongated neck held high. Definitely a first. Been seeing a lot of either a very large hawk or a falcon or maybe a small eagle along the same road, but further west. That particular bird hangs out near the train tracks, across from an old plantation. Nice to see that nature hasn't completely dissappeared in the suburbs of the south.

Could be worse--it could have attacked you!

Super crazy! Guess it was a good thing I was in my car. The poor thing did look disoriented, though, so I'm not sure it was a real threat to anyone. Funny coincindence that it was crossing towards the Starbucks at that intersection in Nashville!

I've seen two wild turkeys in Brookline this season, on Beacon street, no less.

I've read reports of their resurgence in the Brookline area. Supposedly there are a few here in Kendall, but I haven't seen them. Once on the verge of extinction, they are back...with a vengeance.

I saw a couple of the reconnaissance turkeys over the past few years-- once on the spine of the Old South Meeting House in 1999 and one in my back yard in Union in around 2002 or 3? I think it rules. But not as much as watching urban hawks and falcons ripping pigeons to shreds in urban areas with guts and feathers flying everywhere-- that's a REAL nature show.

L: let me put that in context. The turkey was the spine of this building: I worked in the building to the left/behind it.
