NOLA

Me and Rebecca arrived safely yesterday -- plane full of Ohio State fans on their way in for the BSC Championship. The whole town is either in red or purple. WWII Museum today, as well as an early morning walk by where Storyville used to be -- the poverty and desperation was easily the heaviest thing I have seen in years, and we were like three blocks away from Canal, the main street. Whoah. Starting the projects tomorrow -- more to follow.

Current state of NO = depressing, perhaps?

Bingo!

The media portaryal of the state of New Orleans has been pretty drastic -- the images of my head have been of destruction on a Dresden-esque scale. There's way more to it, and that's the somber part -- neighborhoods that look a little run down but are completely uninhabitable. So much to be done, and even more red tape. We're going on a tour of the ninth ward tomorrow. More to follow.

Glad you're there to witness, but I'm sorry it's still in such bad shape 2 1/2 years later.

I get it. I rarely, if ever, find natural disasters/events depressing, urban or rural. For me seeing 45 McMansions built on wet lands or scarring a hillside, depress me more.

Seeing the watermarks far outside the city of New Orleans, and all over what's left of the city itself is pretty heartbreaking. Last year it took me about 2 days to adjust to it, and each time I heard someone's story of how FEMA wasn't helping or their insurance wasn't covering, or their 3rd contractor left without finishing the job and they were out of emergency money to pay for another...it eats away at you for sure. Hard not to feel it deeply.

Natural events = awesome. Government's response to those in need = depressing. Individual's response = heartening.

Heavy, heavy shit today -- the levee tour, the ninth ward. Man.
