back in the magazine saddle again

So, I just submitted my first magazine article in about 7 years to PresenTense. Hopefully it will be published in their April issue; the article is about marriage proposals of Israeli men to American women...based on my own experiences. The piece is pretty funny, but every Jewish woman who's read it says, "That's never happened to me!" Starting to think I may be that special someone to way more men than I thought possible.

Getting a little nervous. I think the original editor I spoke with has left the magazine, and I haven't heard from the one I submitted the article to with edits. Other response has been good, though.

I always do simultaneous submissions to make mailbox runs a little less stressful/more productive.

Got edits back, and somehow the tone of the piece has changed. Will try to make it my voice again over the next couple of evenings.

I think the editor just kicked mine. Kind of feels like I got spanked. Time to re-write.

Aw, M! Once a piece of work is in an editor's hands, it's no longer your writing, it becomes a collaboration. It's easier to not take the criticism personally.

I disagree. It's still my work, and it needs to have my voice. If she wants to write an ironic how-to for American women to get proposals from Israeli men, that's fine. But I don't want my name on it if it's not funny, and not my intention. Besides, this is not a paying gig. If they were paying me, I'd be more inclined to go with it. Or if it were an assignment. I pitched this to her; she just had a different version in her head.

Sorry, I misunderstood. Changing words=OK Changing whole theme/point of the piece= NOT OK. Good luck!

Thanks. I've been hemming and hawing over whether I should keep trying to work with this editor or just revise the piece and shop it around elsewhere. Soliciting advice!
