R.E.M. Immersion #1: 'Chronic Town' (1982)

Record is here. Released August 24, 1982 on IRS Records. It didn't chart well.

Awesome. I got into REM when Robyn Hitchcock started name-dropping Peter Buck. I'll probably add my 2 cents later. For now, I gotta go into a meeting. Boo. Nice choice, btw

Last three songs on this rule. Thank god for the internet 'cause I can't hear a word. Personal fav on this one is "Wolves, Lower".

First band I was in (high school) was briefly named "Corner Garden", which is one of the very few phrases we could make out on this record. My favorite on this one is prob. Carnival of Sorts. I lost touch with R.E.M. after Monster. Looking forward to giving their newer stuff a new listen. (Plus, the old stuff is awesome).

Three things: 1) For a band that claimed to have a fact checker, Pavement fucked up Chronic Town's release date on "Unseen Power of the Picket Fence." 2) When I told the Gecko (who vehemently abhors Michael Stipe with every ounce of her soul) that the latest immersion was her least favorite band, her response was: "You're doing a Big Country immersion?" 3) This one's kinda boring.

OK, I've got 4 things. Ha. 1. I spent almost a whole year listening to "Wolves, Lower" over and over again. This tape, Disintegration, and a mix tape I'd made (Pogues, Morrissey, EMF, Fairground Attraction, New Order, Housemartins and Fleetwood Mac stick out in my mind) were my sole source(s) of entertainment my first year at UNH. That and following the skate-rats around. 2. At the time, Peter Buck delighted me in the same way Prince Philip and Lawrence Ferlinghetti still do - ornery drunkards who (despite possibly being very unpleasant people) tell the best jokes and probably throw the best parties. Plus he plays guitar. I mean, come on. 3. Michael Stipe does seem rather sanctimonious (to this day "What would Michael Stipe say?" is my standard reaction to those who leave lights on, water running, etc.), but I read somewhere that when they were at school together he and Peter had the best way to avoid boring parties (presumably those not thrown by Peter, Prince Philip, or Lawrence Ferlinghetti): 1. Michael pretends to faint 2. Peter carries him outside "to get some air" 3. They run off to find a better party Genius. 4. I stopped listening to them when Bill Berry quit. Good band dynamics are as rare as rockinghorse poo. They'd nailed it. Then Bill had to go and have an aneurism. So selfish, man.

Fun Peter Buck fact: Guided By Voices was the band at his wedding reception.

Just noticed that myself. Had they done "Flashback: Nine-teen-eigh-tee-TWO," it woulda been fine.

Also, R.E.M. played their first show on April 5, 1980. But Sherman's march through Georgia actually happened a few years prior to this.

SUPER fun fact, Mahatma. Thanks for sharing - it totally backs up my "throws the best parties" statement.
