Did anyone else raise an eyebrow at the line about her "roommate"? C'mon.

Only since you brought it to my attention. Now I'm left wondering if they presented themselves as roommates (one/both not being out to family, co-workers whatever), or if that's just the author.
Maybe they really are roommates. You never know. Maybe they're devoted lay Catholics living in chaste community and we just have dirty minds.

I am ready to believe any and all of the above, virtue. Thanks for the reality check outside my Queer Politics mindset.
But I still prefer the version in which they live in a loving, committed relationship but MSNBC used the term "roommate" because they figured people would find the term "partner" distracting. Which makes my QP radar go berserk.

The sister of a very good friend of mine and her partner lived for a couple of years in a new Irish neighborhood in one of the outer boroughs (the Bronx, I think). They had a one bedroom apartment with one double bed. They hung out at the local pub, and were friends with the Irish bartender. The couple was so out, they never made any pronouncements. I can't recall the specifics, but after a year or so, somehow it came up that the bartender had never realized they were lesbians--she just thought that they were very good friends, and that rent was very expensive--of course they'd share a bed!

Chortle-inducing. And very sweet. Bless.
Sounds like my father, actually. When I first moved in with Huzb (when we were planning to "live in sin"), Dad said, "I'm just worried about the temptation!" It took me ages to figure out that he thought we'd... I dunno... take turns sleeping on the couch?
