Official Super Bowl thread

Where are we doing this? Just gonna throw it out there: the Patriots are undefeated in all Super Bowls I've watched at Wadsworth.

Happy to have it here, though when I was at Jeff's last week for the AFC championship he mentioned he was going to have it. I don't wanna bogart the Super Bowl.

Speaking of the old sloganeering, has anybody seen the newly-resurrected "Squish the Fish" shirts?

Belichick was deadpan funny yesterday: "I wish I could see the half-time show" "I'll listen to some Tom Petty this week to put me in the mood" "Free Fallin'"

I think it was the Wadsworth Family BBQ. But yeah, duly noted.

"Even the Losers" would be kind of topical. A shocker would be "Don't Come Around Here No More". Alas, not listed.

The game – excruciatingly awesome pretty much the whole way through – has faded already, two hours later. It’s easier to remember highlights when the outcome is favorable. Which never used to be the case. Up until 2001, the climate around here was one of foreboding doom. The rare local playoff appearance was just delaying inevitable elimination. Nothing to speak of, really, since the Bird-era Celtics. That first Patriots Super Bowl victory, completely unexpected, lightened the mood. Me and my roommate (yep) walked miles against lanes of oncoming traffic, hands outstretched for maximum high-five efficiency, to a Kenmore Square full of jubilant, half-frozen drunks. A swarm of revelers teetered on top of a full city chanting “Yankees suck.” The red Jeep that served as my unwitting chauffer inched through the throng of humanity behind Fenway. A year and a half later, working a restaurant on Newbury, the night manager dispatched me to remind late customers of our one o’clock close. Aaron Boone came up against Wakefield. It went like this: “Gentlemen, the management would like to inform you that should the game go past our….” He hit it out. “Oh. Well, there you go.” Zombies shuffled out as if on cue. A whole winter – no. Scratch that. A whole YEAR of agonizing over every minute detail of that game, adding the transcript to a vault full of tragedies: 1975. Bob Gibson. Cepeda. Denny Galehouse. ‘Curse’ shit that fans and haters alike were sick of. Talismans, omens. Those miscues passed between us like stubborn currency. Now, finally, they’ve had time to gather a little dust. Since the Sox won so improbably in 2004, that stuff has stayed vaulted. Everything is different now, clean, erased. Unencumbered. Much as I woulda liked the Patriots to win it all tonight – four of seven, the Dynasty, all that – I’m keeping the vault closed. Sorry, dudes.

For the postgame show, I watched NESN. Recaps of the Flying Pizza Incident and Raymond's Greatest Follies wiped away all of my postgame doldrums.
