Super Bowl XLIII halftime show thread

Headliners...supporting acts...now that we've lived through Tom "Old" Petty, it's time to move on. I was thinking on the way to work today that the Pretenders would make a good, realistic choice. MC had mentioned KISS, Foo Fighters, Van Halen. Glib was thinking Beyonce, Pchippy chimed in with the triumphant return of the marching band. I'd said that JC Mellencamp could be a predictable though maybe unwelcome choice - a cut or two above Petty. This is oooouuuuuurrrr countryyyyyy... Check out the History of the Halftime Show. I think Up With People is due for another appearance - not since '86!

In what world is John Mellencamp a cut above Petty? Mike Campbell looked great.

In my sordid, twisted world. Really, though, I dig him more than Petty. I like his way-old stuff and Runnin' Down a Dream, but generally speaking, gun to my head I'd rather listen to Mellencamp all day than Petty. But I pray the day I need to make that choice never arrives.

As much as I love to see it be the Pretenders, there's no way they let Chrissy Hynde up there. She'd be all "End the war, stop eating meat, don't buy the shit that they're advertising". It would be the awesomest halftime show ever.
