Batch #15: ESB

Got a call from beer-wine.com today: "There's a hop shortage, we can only send you 3 ounces and you've ordered 4. Do you want the Golding or the Fuggles?" I blame extreme beer.

I saw that article, and it pretty much confirmed my feelings on the subject: I like a fairly hoppy beer, just like I like a fairly hot salsa, but where does it all end? I think you should plant a hop-vine or two.

Planting hop rhizomes is on my TODO list.

FWIW: I got a 'Get Fuzzy' Page a day calender for like 3 bucks in mid January at one of those cheesey mall calendar outlet places. Right now there is an extensive thread going on with R. Wilco and his home brew. I am trying to find repost images without much luck. I wish I had a scanner...

2008FEB18 3g water 8oz Light Munch 10oz Crystal ~60L 8oz Flaked Barley 25min @ 165-170F 8lb Alexander's Pale Malt Extract Boil 70min: 2oz Golding Pellets (6.0%) 40min: 1oz Fuggle Pellets (3.8%) 20min.: 0.5oz UK Fuggle Leaf Plug (5%) Added 3g water to fermenter Pitched Wyeast Activator, #1968 London ESB --- I was following Batch #11 too closely, now that I'm looking at what I did, I think I prefer #14's 1.5oz of bittering hops. Similarly, I should have done a hop inventory before I started, didn't realize I only had a half ounce of Fuggle in the freezer, I was expecting a whole ounce.

2008MAR17 FG 1.015 (5.1% ABV) Primed w/ 3/4 cup of dark brown sugar. Yield: 44 12oz. bottles. Low aroma, nice mouthfeel/maltiness, pleasant bitterness. Finish could be cleaner, but it's not as "band-aidey" as the last batch.

At the Modern Brewer they're currently running a special on "Mystery Hops"--two batches of hop pellets whose provenance is uncertain but is claimed to be "British or Germanic." $1.95/oz, which is about half the price for AKC registered purebred hops. I bought a few ounces. They say it has an alpha acid rating around 9%, good for bittering but not for aromatics.
