Maybe this isn't related to this forum.

[url]http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/BuildingCommunitieswithSo.html[/url] Interesting article about how online communities work (at least, how this guy thinks they work), makes me realize that maybe the way this discussion board is set up isn't the best way to do it. I'm thinking about the "Politik" forum in particular, and message boards in general.

Posted by frame609 on 2004-09-17 03:29:37 +0000
So what sort of restructure are you thinking about? The Politik section works well for me because, for the most part, I don't feel like I'm as opinionated and informed about stuff as you all are- it's fun to lurk a little, but not crucial.

Posted by rladew on 2004-09-17 12:54:14 +0000
yeah... I read this article, but wasn't sure what you had in mind.. Out of curiosity, What's yr chief complaint about why this board isn't working as well as it could?

Posted by tgl on 2004-09-17 14:13:36 +0000
I guess it's mostly that the graphical layout over at [url=http://discuss.joelonsoftware.com/?joel]Joel on Software[/url] is more appealing. His comments about [url=http://catb.org/~esr/jargon/html/F/fisking.html]fisking[/url] I took to heart as well. I also noticed that while we have 20+ registered users, postings are pretty much dominated by frame609, rladew, dawnbistler, and myself. His preference for listing topics by first post date (instead of last post date) makes sense to me, also the removal of a lot of graphical clutter that this [url=http://www.phpbb.com]board package[/url] provides. (Do we all really need to know that 'Smilies are OFF'?) You can watch the changes take shape here: [url]http://www.rideside.net/phpBB2/viewforum2.php?f=1[/url]

On of the benefits of less graphics, less quoting is that the discussion thread looks a lot more like a discussion. Getting closer: [url]http://www.rideside.net/phpBB2/viewtopic2.php?t=519[/url]

Having the graphic breaks is pretty cool. Having said that, have you looked at board.crewcial.org?

Posted by tgl on 2004-09-17 18:27:06 +0000
Yeah. That was one of the first boards I looked at. I didn't "drill down" into topics though. The topic listing needs some space in-between responses, sure.

Posted by frame609 on 2004-09-17 18:34:20 +0000
How about the color scheme? Bco has an adjustable one (which doesn't do jack for me, as I don't know code, but hey.)

Posted by tgl on 2004-09-17 18:52:16 +0000
If you go into your profile link you can change the theme for board. subSilver is the default, rideside the first is the one I mucked around with color on, and rideside2 is the one that doesn't work quite yet. The crewcial board doesn't have as much clutter as the default setting of this board (which is nice).

I have no experience (or time to spend) with other bulletin boards. I can pretty much figure out everything here now. With this new format stuff, can we still post pictures and stuff? I'm an old curmudgeon of the "If It Ain't Broke Don't Fix It" Variety, but I also like learning new things. I'll be curious to see how this develops....

I just turned off the "BBCode" and turned on the (limited) HTML support, that means, for a link, do this: <a href="http://www.rideside.net/~tgl">My Resume</a> For an img do this: <img src="http://www.rideside.net/~tgl/images/comics/fu040917.gif">

A little tough to navigate- I like the front page- and I miss the indicators that let you see which posts were new.

Posted by tgl on 2004-09-17 22:35:30 +0000
Your browser will change the link's emphasis when there is a new reply since that last time you looked at a topic.

Posted by tgl on 2004-09-17 22:36:24 +0000
Oh, just found a bug in seeing the second page of replies.

Posted by tgl on 2004-09-17 22:39:37 +0000
Sorta fixed it.

Some pieces of feedback / constructive criticism: 1. No signatures (I was really diggin on my Jay Z reference / fagen) 2. HTML code, while very easy to grasp could potentially alienate people not familiar with it. 3. You can't see what's new from the "jump to" section on the left: I assume you still get notification e-mails if its a thread you post to, but what about knowing if someone else started a new thread you weren't aware of? Some compliments: 1. Less boxy / more coherent: Looks more like something we all put together as opposed to some cookie cutter software 2. Lets people scroll through posts more easily, get more up to speed (I see what you mena from the article you posted) 3. It seems to look different from other boards I've seen (I guess this is a subset of #1) 4. We appreciate all yr hard work Mr. Administrator!

Do the most recent posts jump to the top?

Posted by tgl on 2004-09-18 01:06:38 +0000
Yeah, no signatures, they seemed to break up the context of the discussion. I'm really turned on by the less boxy, more like a column-in-a-magazine-type look. HTML is only slightly more difficult than the specialized "BBCode". BBCode isn't quite turned off yet, but I'm trying to deprecate it. As a reminder: <a href="<your-link-here>">your-linked-text-here</a> <img src="<your-image-link-here>"> The topics are listed in first post order, based on the article by Joel Spolsky, this will keep topics more current, instead of getting over 100 posts to the "Music / Celebrity / Politics" topic. If your browser is showing "used" links properly, the indication of a new post in a particular topic should be apparent. The "jump to" doesn't show new content, true, I kinda miss that as well. You can still see an indicator on the top-level page (although, I don't have that linked prevalently). Thanks for bearing with me on this, and the input.

Posted by tgl on 2004-09-18 01:09:24 +0000
I also turned off editing and preview, based on the article, we'll see how it goes. (for example, I wish I had caught the following): In the post above the <your-link-here> shouldn't include the < and >. Make sure you have HTML enabled by default on your profile page.

Posted by tgl on 2004-09-18 16:57:32 +0000
Topics with recent posts are now at the top.

Posted by rladew on 2004-09-20 10:30:36 +0000
I think Im startin to dig on the new format. Question: once the php code is fully turned off, will all our past url links, photos, and mayhem die (unless they are reformatted to HTML?)

Posted by tgl on 2004-09-20 17:25:45 +0000
I switched it back to first topic post date. I'd rather see new topics generated than lotsa topic drift. True, this is mostly a problem in "Politik", but hey it's my PHP code. Yeah, the BBCode stuff would stop working. I could probable spend a few hours converting it, but I should wait for after work to do that as well.

Hey Terry, Can you alter the forum so that we can tell when someone has written something new on a topic? I can't tell, and sometimes like to check up on what stupid spouting you all do, but don't want to have to click and scroll each time.

Posted by tgl on 2004-09-21 13:43:00 +0000
On the index page, there is always a link to a canned search for new posts since last visit. Also, if your browser is working correctly, the topic links should changing back to the unvisited color when there are new replies since the last time you looked at the topic.

The bit that says (5 replies) is very good.

I gotta wait 15 sec. between posts. It's a mechanism to keep automated bots from spamming the whole discussion board.

still fucking up the bold thing I Hope This is Bold!

I'm getting a headache.

Posted by frame609 on 2004-09-23 03:47:11 +0000
It's be cool, too, terryg, if you could look at when threads were responded to most recently on the main board.

Posted by tgl on 2004-09-23 05:33:28 +0000
Try no spaces in your bold tags. This thread is fucked up though and won't return to normal. Wait, let's try this: fixed? fixed? fixed? fixed? Anyway. frame609: What's wrong with the view last posts link from the main page?

Posted by frame609 on 2004-09-23 06:27:19 +0000
There's nothing wrong with it- it'd be cooler, I think, if there were (corrected?) times and dates, as well.

any possibility of restoring an edit feature to reduce the finality of the submit button?

Posted by tgl on 2004-09-23 14:41:22 +0000
I am the Board Nazi. No edit for you! I've found that I'm a little more careful (and critical) of my entries now that I know there is no edit available.

Posted by rladew on 2004-09-23 16:12:48 +0000
I'm all for critical, but careful is what I am with work colleagues and people I dont know, since we're all amongst friends... Viva the addendums!

The less is more thing might work better with some little paisleys. They're hell of in this season, dog.
