The "I Hate Julio Lugo Thread"

So can anybody tell me why Lugo is better than Edgar Renteria? They couldn't ship rent-a-wreck out of town fast enough, while Lugo makes as many errors, and his hitting has been abyssmal for his entire stay in Boston. Add to that that he doesn't even look disappointed when he strikes out or hits into an inning ending double-play. The guy has no fire in his belly. Baseball logic says that he plays because he makes $9M/yr. But, shouldn't you always put the players out who give you the best chance to win, no matter how much the guy on the pine earns? Plus the Sox (still) pay about $6M/yr. of Rent's salary. Lugo's sox stats: 2007 - .237 BA, .294 OBP, 8 HR, 73 RBI. / .968 FP, 19 Errors 2008 - .293 BA, .354 OBP, 0 HR, 8 RBI. / .920 FP, 10 Errors Renteria's sox stats: 2006 - .270 BA, .335 OBP, 8 HR, 70 RBI. / .954 FP, 30 Errors

I can't stand the guy. Maybe he's a clubhouse favorite, a morale booster, somehow...lord knows how.

But he looks like a great athlete, doesn't he?

Posted by respectless on 2008-05-08 13:54:37 +0000
No, the girlfriend even commented that he "Looks like a skinny little kid" instead of an athlete. NO REDEEMING QUALITIES, except that "I hate Lugo" only takes 11 keystrokes to type.

Intrigued by the phrase "skinny little kid" (hey - I love me some riot nrrrds), I Googled him. Your girlfriend's right. He looks like a skinny little kid with a rather feminine mustache.

The Gecko's favorite Red Sox player.

I think the Sox keep him around to balance out the 'most egregious lie about age' category. Check it out: Julian Tavarez DOB: 5/22/73 Julio Lugo DOB: 11/16/75 There is no fucking WAY Tavarez is 34 (35 in a few weeks). Or, for that matter, that Lugo is 31.

Red Sox have never had great Shortstops, but Cabrera was a treat when we had him.

Rick Burleson, Rico Petrocelli and Nomar Garciaparra?

Posted by ConorClockwise on 2008-05-08 16:36:32 +0000
None even close to HOF.

Posted by mahatma chani on 2008-05-08 16:38:18 +0000
Dude, don't front. I'm not that big of a baseball nut, but, even I know there was constant talk of the big three shortstops in the league: Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter and Nomar Garciaparra.

Red Sox Hall of Fame Shortstops: -Joe Cronin (his number is retired) -Luis Aparicio

Posted by dyedon8 on 2008-05-08 16:44:25 +0000
Nomar would've had a shot if he wasn't chronically hurt. He'll likely be a bubble candidate for several years.

Posted by respectless on 2008-05-08 16:44:36 +0000
yeah, but Nomahhhhhhh dropped off the radar like a meteor after getting hit in the wrist with a pitch in 2002. and his defense was never really what i'd call sterling. and i think he roided. and that batting ritual was stupid.

Posted by ConorClockwise on 2008-05-08 16:46:16 +0000
Oh, forgot about Cronin...

Posted by ConorClockwise on 2008-05-08 16:49:19 +0000
Not fronting. Those guys weren't that good.

Posted by respectless on 2008-05-08 16:50:15 +0000
do you even think he's a bubble candidate?

Posted by dyedon8 on 2008-05-08 16:59:33 +0000
Sure -- RoY, perennial all-star shortstop with 200+ home runs at a historically weak power hitting position; lifetime .300 BA.

Not much hating going on here, I'm disappointed.

Isn't baseball a game for skinny little kids?

Posted by dyedon8 on 2008-05-08 18:00:37 +0000
A+.

Garciapopup?

Posted by G lib on 2008-05-09 10:55:16 +0000
That's better, thank you.

I missed the game last night, but I heard that Lugo came off the bench and blew it. You still suck, Lugo.

Posted by dyedon8 on 2009-04-29 16:28:09 +0000
Bring back Alex Gonzalez!

Posted by ConorClockwise on 2009-04-29 21:14:12 +0000
Lopez lost and "lost" the game.

Posted by TheFullCleveland on 2009-04-30 11:11:22 +0000
Lugo will always be the target of my ire. Damn you, Lugo!!!
