& what the hell does this have to do with Kerry being "poor and defenseless?"

Right, we don't know b/c he was AWOL. Bush received special treatment to get his Guard placement, then flaunted his "special" status to skip required physicals and at least half weekend commitments. That's the story. We heard it in 2000, and people don't seem to care. I think we need to move on from who did what during Vietnam.
CBS was failed to verify the documents it sed as part of this story. The same thing has happened to many other news organizations over the years. I am a bit put-off that they stonewalled on their sources for a good week, but at least they admit the error.
What if the veracity of the Bush Administration's statements were as hounded as the veracity of CBS'? Wouldn't that be refreshing!?
The NYT probably decided that there were more important stories on 9/20, than the brouhaha over Rathergate. It looks like today is closer to the top. The story today is a bit critical, I think.
Kerry is defenseless just like Bush is defenseless? I don't get the thrust either. Just my liberal bias... ;)

Oh, Kerry isn't the only poor defenseless victim of media coverage (Swifties) he is now joined by Bush (fake documents).
How many Americans still believe Kerry shot himself on purpose to collect a Purple Heart? (Which is false). How many Americans believe George Bush skirted his responsibilty to the National Guard? (Which is true).
