Educational!

The Athenaeum is open until 8PM on Monday nights. Their gallery is having an exhibit called "Always Delightfully Cool: Summer Vacations in Northern New England 1825-1900." Anyone interested in going, sometime in the next couple of weeks? I've never been to the Athenaeum, but it's supposedly a fascinating place. Info here. (By the way, I wouldn't normally consider Hingham to be part of Northern New England.)

Southwest corner rule.

Wherever you reside in New England becomes the southwestern-most corner of the "true" New England.

That's an interesting theory, and I'll admit I can see it having some validity. But as far as I'm concerned it's possible to reach a point where you've gone so far north and east in Maine that you aren't in New England any more. Aroostook County, say--it's really much more Canadian, culturally, than it is Yankee. For me, New England ends at Bangor, more or less, though it does extend down the coast all the way to Eastport.

The corollary to the Southwest corner rule is that the world ends after Portland.

M and I are interested. When are you going, Chippy?

Portland is all right. Kind of felt like the imagined urban utopia for aging lemmingtrail board members. Bike and skateboard friendly; green (both definitions); just enough outdoorsiness, coffeeshops and microbreweries on every corner; densely populated yet filled with "college town idealogies." I bought "Roots" at Powell's. They had my lifework available for purchase, too.

Not tonight--we have prior plans--but next Monday evening after work.

Cool. We're in. Do you know your ETA yet? We can be there as early as 5:30.

That works for me. G Lib might take a few minutes longer to show up, though.

We were going to move to Portland in 2007 for that exact reason. Oops. Now we're going to move to Bath, ME.

Portland, OR, not ME.
