The 5-day prediction for Hurricane Gustav.

Hey Gustav! Maul 'er! (Sorry - bad puns about Austrian Composers are all I can think about - I must be punchy and tired from getting up to feed the baby in the middle of the night...)

I prefer Gustav Holst. Earth People! I come from Jupiter!

I always found Mahler to be ...overblown. Prayers for Haiti & Cuba.

His 1st and 2nd are terrific - the rest get outta hand. I'm hoping this storm magically dissipates.

Lucky for New Orleans, this one fizzled out. Still, I think it's only a matter of time for that city to cease to survive as habitable year-round, unless they're willing to invest in levee technology on the scale which the Dutch have mastered. I'd like to say that New Orleans will rise again, but I'm not convinced.

During & after Katrina, my neighbors in Amsterdam were incredibly thoughtful and caring. People I knew only well enough to wave "hello" to in the street stopped me (the neighborhood's only American) to tell me - very sincerely & sensitively, which it has to be said is really saying something for this particular culture, which tends to be distant & reserved - how much they felt for the people of New Orleans and to tell me about their personal experiences of "the flood". In fact, my boss was an infant during "the flood", and told me that her mother & father sat, holding her, at the peak of their house's roof for 36 hours in pounding rains and freezing temperatures until help arrived to rescue them. I heard that following Katrina, Dutch flood prevention experts volunteered their time & expertise to New Orleans' government in an attempt to assist them in planning how to handle future flooding...

A good article about repairs and improvements since Katrina.
