No doubt MCCains was a silly choice / mistake, but being a complete dick for a moment:

Were the foam core 'Greek Columns' that much more magnanimous?

Er, no. Maybe Obama's columns were magnanimous, but McCain's "Walter Reed" was just plain dumb:

* it wasn't Walter Reed VA Hospital (which would make sense), but Walter Reed Elementary School
* during close-ups on McCain, you only saw the green grass, which contrasted horribly with McCain's complexion and that gold tie

So... the columns might have been over the top (but I'd say "nay", the visual effect worked, it was good stagecraft) but that's not the complaint about the sickly green backdrop (didn't they learn anything from their New Orleans speech? Maybe not, just 'cause you got a lot of experience doesn't mean you have good judgment).

Scene: the McCain White House, Feb. 2009

John McCain: Get me Moscow on the phone!
Dopey staffer, obviously appointed without serious vetting: Right sir! Area code 207 coming right up!

Sixth-grader Joshua Popue offered the explanation most commonly being floated Friday both at the Irvine Avenue campus and in political circles: Somebody in the McCain campaign mistook Walter Reed Middle School for the military's troubled Walter Reed Army Medical Center when preparing the Republicans' high-tech video background wall. "McCain messed up. He was talking about Walter Reed hospital, and he used our picture by mistake," said 11-year-old Joshua.
