Wuss Rock

After the recent Yacht Rock discussions, I decided to listen to something smoooooooth. But, alas, the Music Collection of the People is sorely lacking in the Yacht Rock department. The closest I could find was this chestnut: The discussion when Logical Song came on: Tommy: Hmmmm, this is less 'Yacht Rock', and more 'Wuss Rock', I think. I'm having trouble imagining any wussier than this guy's vocals on this one. M: Wait! This is a man singing?!?!?

Supertramp were hugely popular in my house growing up. Them and Alan Parsons Project. Needless to say, I come from a long line of people chosen last for kickball.

OMG - same here on all counts. I saw Alan Parsons Project live once, they opened for some other proggish band. They must have played "Eye in the Sky", but I don't remember it. I do remember being very upset that they didn't play "Don't Answer Me". Love that song. Supertramp = classic sax rock. Dee Jay Hubris: have you seen them live?

'Don't Answer Me' may be my father's favorite song ever. The number of times I've been in the car as he banged out air-drums to it... yeesh.

Hand raised. I have my ticket stub, probably 1976 at the pre-cursor to the Wang Center; although I would soon abandon prog rock for punk.

I'm a sucker for the Wall of Sound.

Thinking about Wuss Rock a little bit this weekend, although this is probably a different category and decade: Blue Eyed Soul - like Hall and Oates? - 'Say It Isn't So' might fit - Goddammit I love that song, but I dont know how rockin' you look saying that.

Player's "Baby Come Back," awesome though it may be, is def. wuss rock.

According to this site, Hall & Oates AND Player are Yacht Rock.

"Sailing", definitely #1 Yacht Rock, it would have been appropiate at a recent wedding. Yacht Rock or not,"What A Fool Believes" has a great vocal fr: Mr. McDonald. But where's Phil Collins?

So when, then, does Hall and Oates make the shift out of Yacht Rock? Where's the line?

Posted by TheFullCleveland on 2008-09-15 18:49:04 +0000
It could very well be that Hall & Oates *is* the line - the missing link that connects "Yacht Rock" with "Phil Collins". If they're Yacht Rock at all, they're definitely fringe.

The later H and O stuff was less wimpy and more produced -- I think maybe yacht rock was a phenom denoted by year.
