Nerd Alert (slow day at work): MF DU: I know you get music from the CD library, but for the vinyl purists. "I Can't Stand Myself" came out on Ze Records on 12" "So You Want Morre?" (Refix) came out on Ninja Tune on 12" (available on their website) and "The Idiot" came out on RCA Records (Bowie's label at the time). Kudos for playing "Mass Production".

I stand corrected - jbcardinale brings up an excellent point and one I struggle with with these online playlists - do I cite the physical piece I am playing, or the piece as it originally appeared? For convenience, I often have cd comps or greatest hits things and whenever possible I try and go back to cite the original and not the cheeesy "gretest hits" or what have you, but then I also wonder if I am not being truthful of what I am actually playing. Also - to listener X out there hearing either my talkback or reading the online playlist - if I am citing the original (that may or may not be out of print or impossible to find) will that ultimately send them on a wild goose chase for a version they are probably not ever going to find unless they 2nd mortgage their house to procure it on ebay? As I probably have all of 3 listeners at any one time, its probably a moot point anyways, but these are the things I think about...

Mass Production is a mind bender. I can feel my brain curdling as the song reaches its apex. I fully intend these comments as a compliment to Mr. Pop.

I cited the information above because I know you care, MF DU. I think it matters if you care about some of the history behind the music. "The Idiot" would have never been made without Bowie. It's probably one of Bowie's best records, a companion to "Low". Ze Records, in the case of The Contortions, put out a lot of what got labelled 'No Wave' and back in the day a lot of this stuff was released as 12" singles a la disco records, which was a new thing (partly because they sounded better, they still do). As for Ty & Roots Manuva (great track by the way), they both still record for Ninja Tune. Soul Jazz does excellent compilations (check the Ragga Twins), but Ninja Tune should be acknowledged for promoting new quality artists and music since it was started by the guys from Coldcut. However, MF DU is a disc jockey, not an archivist. We already have enough of those.
