love to hate on hipsters?

just in case you haven't seen it yet: look at that fucking hipster. not as cool as fuck you penguin, but - given that most of the pictures are from new york - i'll buy a round for the first person who a) finds someone they know immortalized on the site, or b) successfully submits photographic evidence collected at the model. heh.

The panel I linked to in the Grifter (read made fun of for being too pomo) thread was written up in the Observer Some choice moments: “I imagine that folks moving to Bushwick open their closet and find no tube socks and think, ‘I’m not a hipster, my parents don’t pay my rent, I listen to classic country music, without a trace of irony,’ and then go on being the same arrogant, over-privileged people with the smug satisfaction that it’s only hipsters who destroy neighborhoods, not them or their friends.” ... The moderator, who happened to be Mr. Lorentzen’s sister, Allison, challenged him on that: “Can you name the other places where you lived where people were well-read?” “Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Cambridge, Somerville,” he replied. “Not necessarily Hoppington, Massachusetts.” (Speaking of over-privileged and arrogant, Mr. Lorentzen did, in fact, grow up in my aforementioned hometown, but went to St. Mark's prep and then to Harvard)

I love you, Mr. TFC.

Speaking as a Hoppingtonian-by-marriage, I take umbrage at Mr. Lorentzen's remarks. We Hoppingtonians are both hipper AND more erudite than he realizes.

Back in our UNH days when we would go to shows, Bizquig lovingly referred to this populace (whether they are 'hipsters' or not I have no f_in clue) as "the misunderstood". It is a term I have grifted and re-purposed to my liking ever since.
