Crop Report
Emerging now:
Radishes, corn, parsley, mint, garlic (or shallots...can't remember which), tomatoes, eggplant (Ichiban), beets, chard, watermelon, and I think spaghetti squash (could also be cucumber, zucchini or pumpkin).
To come:
More tomatoes, green beans, soy beans, peas, sugar snap peas, basil, more radishes, more beets, more chard and marigolds. Probably a few other things I can't remember, too.
This weekend...microgreens treats!
Last night we ate a nice mess of home-grown second-year collards (in their second year they flower, becoming more like broccoli raab) with home-grown chives and a boughten onion.
Several of last year's carrots wintered over successfully too, under the 6" of straw mulch I laid down. Their foliage is getting green and lush. I wonder what the roots are like.
Potatoes are coming up, and garlic is doing well. Self-seeded dill and cilantro are only a couple of inches high so far.
There are a LOT of radishes, and they are mighty spicy. Thinned some last night and ate them with mint and beet sprouts last night. They added some kick to my burrito for sure.
Bought a huge bag of peat moss to use as mulch as soon as the rest of the sprouts get moving; should keep everything happy and healthy all summer...and will mix in well this fall. Will likely mix in some sand then, too...to try and loosen up the clay that makes up my backyard.
I think I've identified either pumpkin or spaghetti squash starting to sprout, too. Every day is something new. Definitely exciting!
Happy gardening and good eating!
Carrots have sprouted, about 1" tall.
Peas about 2"-3"
Lettuce about 1"-2", with more oak leaf than past years.
Brocolli rabe just breaking the surface.
No sign of potatoes from the 6 mounds.
Apple trees were hardily flowering, and I have high hopes for the Red Rome, but the Macoun might not bare fruit again...
Three kinds of tomatoes, squash, zucchini, beans, arugula, lettuce.
Reports to follow.
