Bad news for Bush:

A pro-Kerry op-ed piece in the Union Leader. From an Eisenhower, no less: http://www.theunionleader.com/articles_showa.html?article=44657

609 starting a politik thread...Nice. No surprises here, as Ike would be voting for Kerry himself. Ike's stance on the seperation between business and the military was down right obsessive. Pretty much the opposite of Bush and Cheney's "closed door/no bid/my businesses only/ no EPA/ let's make money off war" ideals. Eisenhower's "Military industry" speech is a great read.

I was thinking mostly of the relative impact of a pro-Dem piece being run in the Union-Leader. If you lose Manch Vegas, you lose the state.

There is the Republican north woods part of NH (i.e. where P. Chippy lived for many years) but in terms of population, I agree with you. (as long as the manch vegas folks vote)

Let's also remember that Republicans in the North Country of NH have a different slant than the Republicans along the Southern Tier. Northern Reps have more of a libretarian streak. Witness the former State GOP head from North Conway that will not be voting for Bush this year.

Shit is definitely weird when Nackey Loeb and co. @ the U. Leader start ruinning Democratic op-eds. I actually think that is good for them - have some variety in yr paper! (Even having my own conservative leanings, I find The Union Leader to be one of NH's scariest papers) I spose its not that far fetched though: UL has always loved P.Buchanan and I know Mr. Buchanan is very opposed to Bush's Iraq involvement.

What you said is true, Terryg, but the population base, as we well know, is the southern part.

Right, the sourthern tier is full of MA transplants. NH has grown more conservative over time, b/c it attracts those MA residents who want to skip out of state income tax. Nevermind that the discrepancy in taxation is based largley on federal taxes then state taxes. The federal taxation being higher b/c the MA median income is higher than in NH. http://www.taxfoundation.org/statelocal04.html

But the people in Southern New Hampshire are going to pay less taxes than the folks up north because of the property tax, as well- the southern part of the state is way more developed. I'm not sure that I agree with people moving to New Hampshire equaling more conservative because they don't want to pay taxes, as you said.

Rideside.net is the new Doonesbury: http://images.ucomics.com/comics/db/2004/db041011.gif

IMHO: anyone that looks for non-biased political info from either the Union Leader (Sieg Heil Nackey Loeb!) or Doonesbury should have their head examined

Posted by tgl on 2004-10-11 18:17:39 +0000
I thought it was incredible difficult to find any one source that is without a biased opinion. What does it say when a 'left' strip like Doonsebury is referencing a 'right' newspaper like the Union (Mis)Leader? Makes me wonder what Mallard Fillmore is up to these days...

Posted by rladew on 2004-10-11 19:55:59 +0000
Yeah.. I'm definitely with you on this Terry. I guess I would propose a new "degrees of bias" argument. In other words: I am now reading like 4 newspapers a day (NYT, WSJ, B.Globe, Nashua Telegraph (for local stuff- not gonna bother w/ AP), checking online @ Reuters, National Journal,BBC, CNN, Economist, WSJ (and yeah, I admit it ...Drudge) All of these (with maybe the exception of Drudge, which is just a guily pleasure - I'm sure you all have yours) seem pretty credible and well established. Biased? Absolutely. but maybe less so than National Review, Move On, Slate, Johnkerry.com Gw.com, Doonesbury, Rush Limbaugh, Michael Moore, Union leader etc etc...

Mallard Fillmore was like the worst strip.

Posted by tgl on 2004-10-12 13:16:37 +0000
I wouldn't mind seeing a good right wing comic strip. Mallard Fillmore just doesn't cut it. Maybe Pluggers?

Posted by rladew on 2004-10-12 13:30:53 +0000
I can remember enjoying pluggers, but I dont remember any of its political content ot be honest...
