Secession

I'm thinking seriously about it. LET'S QUEEB THIS SHIT UP!!!

Posted by G lib on 2004-11-03 14:46:04 +0000
Actually, let's join the Queebs. I've already checked the Canadian Library job board already this morning. ________________ 100% Riot-Schtuffy!

We're taking you with us... USA out of New England!

Where are you going to live BQ?

Speaking of secession: We lost The Civil War. Had it gone the other way we would be much better off today. F the South. (sorry Mir) -=>J

I'd love a slave, personally.

Still want to know where BQ and rladew would move to... Ohio?

Posted by G lib on 2004-11-03 18:19:55 +0000
RLadew -- My guess is Montana. Lots of Libertarians there. BizQuig -- He'd stay-- and bitch a lot, just like the confederates after the first Civil War. ________________ 100% Riot-Schtuffy!

I didn't see the headline "Secession." I thought Giordana's post was one of those desperation-Oh-my-God-the-country-is-going-to-Hell- in-a-handbasket-I'd-better-move-out-of-the-country posts. Not the let-me-speak-for-everybody-here-and-ask-that-the-French-speaking-part- of-Canada-who-hates-all-of-the-U.S.-anyway-but-lets-not-let-an-ugly- fact-like-that-get-in-the-way-of-me-wanting-Massachusetts-to-secede- to-Canada post. An honest mistake, methinks. -B (Ed: word wrap)

Posted by tgl on 2004-11-03 19:18:33 +0000
The country may be going to hell in a handbasket, but Massachusetts & New England isn't. Benson defeated in NH & Romney's bid for more (R) in the MA state legislature failed miserably.

(Just to be a prick:) None of my posts are meant to speak for bizquig3000 or rladew!

Actually, I meant for this forum for us to discuss both of those options, as well as the one I'm advocating: New England should seceede from the US. We'll see if Canada wants to take us, and if they don't, we'll make our own country. ________________ 100% Riot-Schtuffy!

I actually liked Jacoby's article in the Globe today. Even voting for someone in a strong red or blue state, the increment to your candidate's national tally is significant.

BQ wins the award for most dashes in a single post. If everyone who has said they were going to vote for Nader in '00 had done so, it'd be different.

I voted for him in 2000, as well- the projections were way larger than the actual vote total. So, two choices again.

"Oh, and one last thing. A lot of progressives are joking about "moving to Canada" -- myself included . But if you're one of those folks who insists that they are really, really considering it, please: do us all a favor and go. The Republicans will be happy to see you leave, and the rest of us don't really need you hanging around and reinforcing the stereotype that liberals (a) are so unpatriotic that they will ditch their nation in a time of need, and (b) feel entitled to the benefits of a government (like, Canada's) without having to work for it. If you're "totally serious" about moving this time, then pack up and head for the border, compadre. Otherwise, dig in your heels, roll up your sleeves, gird your loins and get ready to fight, like the rest of us intend to do." Here's the thing, I've spent 4 years being ashamed of my president, yet proud of my country. My patriotism has taken a hit. I don't love my people as much anymore. I'm no longer apple-pie. When I threaten to go, it's not to wait out the time under this regime, it's because I am offended by the American populous. I'm not going, mind you, but the voters have spoken and my values do not click with those of the American people. If I were to fight and try to change things to make them more the way I would like them, a majority of the nation would be less happy with my way than GW's highway. So this is the way it is. PS As the Turkish say "Allah hanna siktir" (sp?)

Separation of church and state, motherfucker!

Posted by rladew on 2004-11-09 20:20:33 +0000
I would say that there arent people or a 'populous' per se that offends me. Rich Ladew as a person and American can find common ground and understanding with Dawnbixtler ot Tendiamonds or tgl as people and Americans. I feel like we are getting in trouble with each other (and I am absolutely guilty of this too) when we try to relate to one another as Rich the right winger or dawnbixtler the leftist. Tendiamonds: how could other Americans see their own kind as the problem? at the end of the day, Anyone's interests in the 50 states would be more closely aligned than that of an individual in canada or france or spain wouldn't you think? Some of last Tuesday's overpowering red sentiment in the country right now could possibly be a misunderstanding / resentment / readctiontosentiment you are expressing as far as intolerance for other Americans is concerned. If we are to really value each other's differences, we're all going to have to understand and dare I say it, respect, other people's divergent viewpoints. To carry an effective message for social and political change in the country, any political party is going to have a hard timedoing it if you put yrself on a pedestal and call 51% of the country backwards. At first, I thought this whole secession thread was a joke, but it seems a lot of people are taking this seriously... _______________________________ “When you’re creating your own shit, man, even the sky ain’t the limit.” Miles Davis

Posted by tendiamonds on 2004-11-09 20:43:58 +0000
I'm in full agreement with you rladew, I can't call a majority of the country backwards. That's what I was saying. In this country, I am backwards, and that upsets me. It would be wrong for me to fight for change that would upset a majority of the population. The people voted to keep the status quo, so who am I to buck it?

Posted by tgl on 2004-11-09 21:03:30 +0000
It's also hard if 51% of the populuous believes that 48% are arrogant, elitist, preaching assholes. Liberals can be as nice and cheery as all get out, but at the end of the day a significant portion of the country will still consider liberals baby-killing heathen. I don't remember Kerry slandering any state in the Union, while Bush wasn't called out for nearly putting Massachusetts in line with Iran, Iraq and N. Korea. The break-up isn't 51-48, though. There are some on the hard right that will never accept and will continue to scorn the social ideals of "east coast liberal elitists". However, there is a significant portion of this country, the so-called middle, that approve of legal abortion and civil unions for gays. You can turn on any conservative talk show, read any Religious Right rag, and you'll find _way_ more vitriol than the post-election grumbling contained on this page. It goes both ways is all I'm sayin'. On internationalism: Some of the 48% of America that supported Kerry might even think that our interests _are_ the same as Canada's, France's and Spain's. At the end of the day, human beings are all the same. I think the majority of our global peers are interested in security & freedom & the ability to make a quick buck. Global corporations don't give a rat's ass what nationality their revenue stream comes in. All my positions sprung fully formed from the mind of Zeus: american prospect Social change is happening whether or not those on Right want it to.

But yeah, vinegar and honey and all that...

Posted by dawnbixtler on 2004-11-09 22:22:50 +0000
Why can't you call a majority backwards? 80% of America wanted to keep slavery in 1861, was that not backwards? This is a matter of opinion and not fact; you can say whatever you want. I argue the majority are backwards, misinformed, and scared. I hear some ridiculous and untrue sentiments from the right and red states and here on this board, but time will prove them backwards. I live in Massachusetts -- "The Spirit of America". We started public education, we didn't vote for Nixon, we started gay marriage (yet we have the lowest divorce rate), and we started this whole freakin' country. Moves called "backwards" in their time, but we will be proven progressive yet again. Bush will stay my pet goat. Laura Bush will kill again. The GOA will continue their lawsuits against Cheney. Rove will go Jim Cunningham (Donnie Darko reference). Something will happen, and the "forward" vote will be revealed. It always does...

Posted by rladew on 2004-11-10 00:02:54 +0000
I wasnt trying to say anyone was backwards, or that the progressive causes being fought for in this country are bad. Just that we can all miss the forest for the trees when we think it is our group that is the ONLY group that is correct... It divides people and I think all of us would agree thats not something we need more of.... _______________________________ “When you’re creating your own shit, man, even the sky ain’t the limit.” Miles Davis

C'mon, if we were all correct, were would the fun be? ;) You're right though, the divisiveness can't help. I still think the red-blue divide isn't very accurate.

My people got to the South in the late 1930s; my ties are strictly from my own lifetime and experience. My recent experiences here notwithstanding, I really like the South, but not all it has stood for, or against, over the years. Then again, there have been an awful lot of Southern presidents. That should say something.
