Nod or dig?

Dig to the Comic industry / Nod to Breathed?
Posted by tendiamonds on 2005-03-22 02:48:25 +0000
Anyone who is nodding to Breathed has not seen Opus. I still like to think about how offended both Breathed and Tinsley would be if they knew that Natalie thought Opus and Mallard Fillmore were the same strip.

Plus the Peanuts nod with the brick wall.

Are Patsis and Darby sleeping together?

This is reason enough to add FoxTrot to the page...

Is it just me, or are all of these comic strips unbeliveably sub par?
Can somebody give me one good reason why I should bother to read any of these on a regular basis? I know I'm sounding like an asshole here, but I'm trying not to be one. I'd genuinely like to know why you guys like these strips. Enquiring minds want to know.
Posted by pamsterdam on 2005-04-03 14:57:31 +0000
It's not just you, and I don't think you sound like an asshole. I'd always assumed that I'm not bright enough to "get it" but if BQ agrees with me on this, then... Well I guess I could still not be bright enough but at least a smart person agrees with me.
Posted by dawnbixtler on 2005-04-04 02:05:37 +0000
Why read any of them or all of them?
I read them because I like them. Basically you get to knew the characters and the more you have read the comic, the better it gets. Some comics play on current trends and counter culture (Zippy) and some are mostly puns (Pearls b4 Swine and Fusco). Some are fairly hard political commentary (Doonesbury and the Boondocks) and some are just good art (Get Fuzzy). Arlo an Janice have arguably the best romance ever depicted in fiction.
No, I don't read Garfield or Family Circus, but it's nice to spend all of 3 minutes and check in three or four times a week with the good ones. And sometimes I laugh out loud.
Posted by frame609 on 2005-04-04 03:55:20 +0000
I still think that Arlo and Janis hate each other.

People must assume that a staggering intellect like mine requires esoteric, arcane, perplexing humor. Not true; I love a good "Oooo, those alligators sure wanna eat that zebra" joke.

Tears are rolling down my cheeks.
Right up there with the time my friend Emily told her patronising boss, "Gawsh, I don't go in much for that book-learnin'!"

I've thought of this before, and I love it. Not really a pun -- rare for Pearls Before Swine...
Posted by tendiamonds on 2005-08-09 17:49:58 +0000
I recently picked up Sgt Piggy's Lonely Hearts Club Comic... it's an anthology of the first two years of PB4S. Fabulous. Has a running commentary where Patsis highlights inside jokes or personal asides to some of the comics.
Posted by tendiamonds on 2005-09-22 13:49:09 +0000
Pastis had plenty of notice to do this plotline at the same time the stupid Blondie party happened... he's really dropping the ball here.

I don't remember if it was Patsis or Darby, but one of them, in one of their books mentioned that he tried to pass of "@$$" as the alleged censor of "ass" and it didn't fly...

I haven't had a chance to catch up on the Commies in a while. I can't believe Conor commented on Sunday's Get Fuzzy, when Sunday's Pearl's was his shtick in our high school's senior talent show:
