I haven't looked at this yet (I'm at work), but John Cleese's family name was indeed Cheese until WWI when his grandfather changed his name to Cleese in order to avoid teasing by his fellow army men. This, of course, did not prevent John Cleese from growing to the height of six feet by the time he was 11 years old, thereby becoming a social pariah and the target of his schoolmates' little fists of fury.
