Steam Boy: Full of Hot Air

So, during my cambridge jaunt I also caught the new Katsuhiro Otomo project "Steamboy" @ Kendall. I'm gonna have to agree with the not-so fat and almost gaunt looking as of late Roger Ebert. Cons: 1. way too long 2. nude (almost) grandfather figure of Steamboy yelling crazy shit about the nature of science 3. annoying, bitchy female peer of Steamboys 4. far fetched storyline (far fetched would have been ok a.k.a. 'not afraid to fail' or even downright 'creative' if it wasn't for point #1 Pros: -impressive visuals (10 years to make - you can see that the drawings were the labor of love here) - Patrick Stewart (I love him even in voiceovers - I dont think he is the voice in the Japanese subtitled version, though...) Maybe it deserves a second look before Im so judgemental, but I nodded off twice, which is something I hardly ever do when I get to go to a movie - still one of my alltime favorite activities....

I was thinking more about this yesterday. It wasn't that I was expecting Akira pt.2. It was just that there was absolutely nothing in the way of an interesting story.... Maybe if this was an art exhibit of all the drawings Mr. Otomo and his crew had done over 10 years it would be more impressive... but as a film... I duuno..... _______________________________
