Tornado, Tornahdo

Last night was scary. The Tornado Watch I woke up to turned into several intense thunderstorms converging on my new fair city, along with a bunch of tornados that sailed through town. I spent most of the evening watching the weather reports from my hallway. Got a little jittery. There was a ton of lightning, and some extremely loud thunder. The rain was torrential. Glad it's over. This is the second bout of tornados since I've been here. Luckily they weren't as damaging as the ones that ripped through downtown and the surrounding areas in 1999.

Really bad storm last night ripped off part of my carport. The house shook so badly at one point I thought I was about to see the Emerald City! Good thing for insurance...and that the enormous trees in front of my house didn't fall on me in my sleep.

Scary!

It was REALLY scary. It was really quiet, then REALLY loud, then really quiet, then it rained and thundered and lightninged a lot. I heard a few booms outside my house; must've been the enormous branch that fell from one of my enormous trees, and my carport coming apart. Ugh. Insurance adjustors will be in touch with me in a few days; I'm sure there are others with way worse damage. I'm going to check my attic for leaks when I get home. Definitely not excited about that; the attic is also scary, but in more of a hot and spidery and creaky way.

Yikes! And I thought we had bad weather over here...

Never had storms like that growing up in Knoxville; the mountains blocked nasty stuff like that. It takes getting used to, but all's quiet now. The insurance guys got back to me, and now I just have to take more photos of the damage and take measurements of it. They don't need to send anyone to see it. Technology!

Another round of very scary storms and tornadoes last night. Tgl was kind enough to talk with me for a while during the worst of them. Gotta say that golfball-sized hail hitting my metal carport was scary, but the house shaking and the sound of the wind was even worse. On the walk around my neighborhood this morning, I saw a neighbor's shed ripped in half; don't know if it was wind or lightning. Either way, it was only about a block away. My house seems fine, and very little tree damage. Minor miracle. Glad the early morning storm wasn't as bad...still woke me up, but went right back to sleep.

Lorbering: In case you haven't heard non-stop tornado sirens, it's really creepy. Apparently they sound when someone sees a funnel cloud. They sounded in my neighborhood for over an hour.

Got a call from the group I went to New Orleans with Dec. '06...they were checking in to see how Memphis fared. G lib, I don't think we're in for anything of the sort when you and your mom get to Nashville! But, if we do, my hallway is very cozy and my neighbor used to work for the power company...so we wouldn't be in the dark for long.

So glad you're safe, Mir!!! The tornado was one of the BBC's top stories tonight, with many mentions of the devestation of TN. Some houses & businesses were completely flattened - it's mind-blowing.

This is quite a storm - Gusting winds, lightning, thunder, and about 2 inches of rain today.

Definitely saw that it's hitting y'all hard, too. And get ready for the cold front!
