Miles Davis AND the Sex Pistols

Maybe time for a roadtrip to Cleveland

How the fuck did I omit Black Sabbath from the title of this thread?. Wow. I hope Geezer Butler isn't reading this... also, go figure, the ceremony is in NYC. I thought the ceremonies were always held @ the RNR Hall of Fame's home operations... _______________________________

Next up: Herbie Hancock? Return to Forever? Perhaps there should be a "jazz fusion" wing of the the RRHOF.

I see what you're getting at if you're going strictly by the likes of \'Bitches Brew', but Mr. Davis (a la the albums 'Jack Johnson', 'Live evil', 'On the Corner' etc) explicitly gave the finger to the jazz community and, while maybe not in the rock camp the way Steve Miller was in the rock camp, definitely had scrawling electric guitars, ball busting amplification, drug-induced cover art enough to join the ranks of Zappa, Prince, and other genre defiant artists which have made it in to the hall of fame. He had to have John Mclaughlin emulate Hendrix's style on "Jack Johnson" as Jimi was his #1 choice. I think I read somewhere that studio time between Hendrix and Davis was booked and scheduled to happen a few weeks after Mr. Hendrix choked on his vomit.... alas.. as far as Herbie Hancock... Why Not? the Chameleon era stuff had a lot of rock in it, also his collaboration with Tony Williams's Lifetime, and collaboration w/ DJ DXT in 'Rockit' I think I would draw the line @ Return To Forever, though. after reading "Dance of Days" about DC punk rock, I bought a Return to Forever album as the Bad Brains kept going on and on about how wonderful they were. The RTF disc has gotten less than one spin in the 4 or so years Ive had it. ick. _______________________________

Yes, I do agree that Miles definitely waded deep into rock territory, and that with his general influence on rock music make him a qualified inductee. It did startle me some to see his name among the inductees, though - I probably need to ease my genrification of music some. Miles might be as far as the RRHOF goes, though. Are there other jazz greats suited to be inducted? I can't think of any other jazz giants who might fit into the rock giants category, too. It would be interesting if bands like Mahavishnu Orchestra or RTF or Chase get in at some point. What RTF album do you have? "No Mystery" is really fantastic. I'm not so familiar with their other stuff. If you know the Mahavishnu Orchestra, there's this Japanese band called Ruins that does a medley consisting of 5 or 10 second snippets of MO's tunes. Very neat.

RUINS!!!!!! Yoshida Tatsua is a god! I missed them the last time they played @ Middle East. I have records from them off skin Graft, Shimmy Disc, and Tzadik. The RTF I have is a 2xcd on the columbia legacy imprint. something that is live with a reddish cover. cant remeber the name. Mahavishnu is Zawinul, no? I think I heard Snatana and Mahavishnu do a rendition of Coltrane's 'A Love Supreme' that was quite nice... as far as RRHF: other Jazz / Rock Chameleons: Pat Metheney would be a stretch, Zorn and Laswell probably arent popular enough. You're right its a small list (albeit an exciting one) Jandek has been making albums for over 20 years... _______________________________

I only have the disc of theirs with the Mahavishnu medley. I totally love it. Another great Japanese band is Boris - the album with the take-off on the Nick Drake album cover is fantastic. I've heard a little of RTF's later stuff, and it ain't all that super. The live stuff you have may be from that period. "No Mystery" is a lot of fun though; check it out if you get the chance! Mahavishnu is Jan Hammer of Miami Vice Theme fame. Zawinul was Weather Report, which has some fun stuff, too. I need to hear this Jandek fellow at some point. He sounds legendary.

Legendary means 'fucking absymal' to like 99% of the peeps, but I'll play some for you.

Well, 99% of the Jandek stuff is intolerable. "Interstellar Discussion" is a good one. What's that other one I liked? "Blue Corpse?" Is that the one that has "Aiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeee wahhhn Ted twooooo diiiiieeeee" on it? Wait, Jandek's first record came out in 1978. That makes him eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Wonder how many votes he got this year.

"Blue Corpse" it is. So I have to finagle my way into getting a ballot for the Baseball Hall of Fame AND the Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame. Yow!

Ooooh I love Johnny. (just ask buzzorhowl) I had no idea these guys had to pay for their own tables... I don't know if that's refreshing or revolting, but I do know that Steve Jones ain't got that kinda dosh lying around.
