Sorry Miriam. I'm gonna have to say that life is much to short to not have a decent record player. (As I read my own last sentence - It's time for me to take action on my piece of shit)
Who's the Hi-fi guy? A salesperson at a store or a friend?
You can get a decent one at a place like crutchfield.com, or go on a web forum or something, it's probably not as bad/ expensive as you think.
My annoying record story is that mine (Kenwood Belt Drive piece of shit w/ auto return and a hugely overused cartridge)is too close to the ground, and is Hugely sensitive to any footsteps, tiptoes, jumps, walks, hops, spins, etc. Ever try to listen to the first Ramones LP sitting still on yr couch? Not a pretty thing.
I must add that despite all the above troubles, it is still very good to have vinyl around and a way to play it.

My lovely wife bought me one of these at Crutchfield for X-Day. I love it.

I tried to break it.
Stupid belt drive, doh.

Wow! Thanks! I'm still hoping to get a free one from my coworker who has a spare. If that one doesn't come through, I may go with that option.

The reason Natalie picked that particular model, by the by, is that it's a nice semi-automatic, belt drive with a builtin preamp that is on a switch. The preamp is key, since my stereo doesn't have a "phono" input so I have my turntable on "aux"... the switch thereof is key, since I may someday hook this up to a stereo that does have a phono input.

That's pretty sweet! Good thinking on her part.

The phono preamp is like the appendix of the stereo world. It's not an organ you think about until there is something wrong with it.

I got an adapter for my phono 'cause my stereo doesn't have that option. Paid $100 for it, so I want to find a good use for it.
