Portable music poll:
Posted by Null Protocol on 2006-02-08 18:03:05 +0000
My first impulse was to tick off the last "Silence" option on the poll, but while cool, and relevant to our recent "black crack" threads, I was unable to choose any option.
I always find it interesting that us humans (Me included, on the days when I am human at least) always like to pit one medium or format against another: digital vs. analog, vhs vs. beta, full screen vs. widescreen, Dolby 5.1 surround vs. DTS, SACD audio vs. DVD audio. console audio vs. portable audio, headphones vs. speakers.
What I've come to a conclusion on is this: I AM A MEDIA CARNIVORE!!!!
If it is a device or medium that feeds my head with words, sounds or pictures I am interested in it. If the scenario to obtain a new to me device that does the above stuff presents itself, I will jump at the chance.
Ipods dont make my cd's obsolete. My cds dont make my tapes or records obsolete.
Each format has its pros and cons and convieniences, but I guess Im a packrat unwilling to abandon one medium for another. Sure, it creates space problems, but Im willing to live with that...

I guess I'm trying to figure out who uses a personal music device that they can dictate while walking around.
While a car CD player is definitely 'portable', I was interested in the non-walkman CD/cassette format.
Yes, I still have scores of cassettes.

The chip the government put in my head gets pretty good FM reception, but AM is pretty bad unless there's nice low cloud cover

I have a recordable Mini Disc player that has a mic-in jack w/ a sony condenser mic,
Although no Ipod / Mp3 player seperate from any of the mp3 playing software on my dell PC...

The only time I use my portable CD player is on road trips, since my car cassette player is not very usable.

music for the Rock / Vin diesel / Britney Spears crowd...

Does the CD/cassette player in the car that I share with my sister and mom (sometimes) count?

I have a portable cd player that I use almost every day. It is a Panasonic CE. I also drive a Corolla CE.
My rechargable batteries ran out today during one of the coolest songs on the Kinks "We are the village green preservation society" CD. I was freaking out.

I have a portable CD player that I used yesterday, for the first time in about 2 months. On average I use it about once a month, with the occassional weeklong porta-CD-fest. It has some sort of mp3 capabilty that I haven't bothered to figure out.

My portable Fischer-Price turntable = seven bux on eBay and worth every penny.
Posted by mr. mister on 2006-02-08 20:13:56 +0000
I can't buy a new cd player because they all have this annoying skip delay feature that pauses songs for ten seconds at a time. I want my coaster crap cd's to skip fast darnit.
Posted by Null Protocol on 2006-02-08 20:22:39 +0000
that cartridge must have seen some pretty serious cumulative action!
I'm thinking about getting maddie a portable record player on ebay for her 2nd(!) birthday in May... My mom still has a large amt of Sesame Street vinyl...

ipods are awesome

When I got this new CD player at Tweeter I traded in my old one, which I loved, and it still sort of worked, but was definitely on its last legs. I was part of this program where you can turn in your old portable player for a new one, and time was running out for that, so I had to do something. And Tweeter didn't even have any normal portable CD players, all they had were these models with tons of things I didn't even need which only drove up the price of the damn things. I agree with you Mr. Mr., bring back the plain old porta-CD players. Who needs the bells and whistles?
Posted by mr. mister on 2006-02-08 20:50:56 +0000
right on. I don't want to sound like an old man but they don't make em the way they used to. I've dropped my cd player plenty of times. It doesn't look too good. Sometimes it doesn't play all my cd's. But gosh darnit... I love the ugly bastard.

Mine moved downstairs, I got it at Value Village in Ypsi for $8

I still have mine from childhood...but the speaker is f'ed. Volume is virtually non-existent and the Hi-Fi guy said it probably wasn't worth or an option to fix. Still should bring it in for him to see.

iPods are the shit, let's face it. 'specially for the collector music geeks here on this board. I still buy CDs, it's preposterous to think buying music would stop with an MP3 player.
BTW: for those who wish to support the band, pick up our disc (if ya haven't yet) at Newbury Comics.

No, iPods are shit, actually. Too much glam and glitz, too little plain functionality. You are a victim of excellent marketing.
Posted by Null Protocol on 2006-02-09 16:15:43 +0000
OOOOh! Something else out of favor with 10D... Why Am I not surprised?
Posted by tgl on 2006-02-09 16:25:26 +0000
iPods play the music files that you store on them... what functionality does the marketing promise that the product does not deliver?
Posted by dawnbixtler on 2006-02-09 16:30:42 +0000
Glam and glitz on the iPod? That is not an angle I have heard.
Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-02-09 18:47:41 +0000
The iPod is fashionable. It has a wheel. It has click noises. It is sleek. It has hot marketing.
Other mp3 players have more effective usability.
The iPod sells well because of its marketing. Apple has learned its own lesson from the past, an inferior product with good marketing will win in the marketplace. This time they are the inferior product, last time they were the superior product. In general, I don't think the company has grown much since then, except now the have great marketing, and all of their products are doing better, but I would consider nothing they do to be as revolutionary as the first Macs.

Which portable MP3 player do you like better?
Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-02-09 19:15:03 +0000
I haven't used many, but I like the products from Samsung and Creative Labs... Some have AM tuners, which they all should.
Posted by Null Protocol on 2006-02-09 19:21:10 +0000
It's called the grammatically correct sundial. It wont EVER play any ringtones, eschews the sleek asthetic, and is so obscure that it makes it vastly easier to point out the faults of better known players that one happens to dislike.

I have an "iAudio M5" which is made by a company called Cowon. Basically just a portable hard drive that knows how to play music files. Doesn't do anything else, as far as I know, but that's fine. For up/download , "cp -R" works just fine. Recommended
If, on the other hand, you're looking for a player that will lock up every 20 seconds when used in cold weather, and that will deafen you with shotgun-like booms at random times, then may I suggest the Pogo Ripdrive? POS
Posted by tgl on 2006-02-10 04:04:32 +0000
The M5 runs on GNU/Linux? I'm sold. (I continue to be swayed by lack of accessibility).

I have yet to find an MP3 player w/ AM radio. I have found some with FM.
I have also heard first hand horror stories about Creative Zen, and the crutchfield reviews don't help. I'm still shopping.
Posted by dawnbixtler on 2006-02-10 05:59:20 +0000
Should one care if the MP3 player is "Flash Memory" or the "Hard disc" style?
Posted by buzzorhowl on 2006-02-10 07:13:03 +0000
Hard drives are more likely to skip; flash drives hold less media.
Posted by Null Protocol on 2006-02-10 13:29:35 +0000
This isn't first hand, but my bro in law reports that the flash drive thingies also take longer (although not by a whole heck of a lot longer) to load than disc drives.
Posted by tendiamonds on 2006-02-10 14:33:05 +0000
There are Samsungs with AM Radio.
Posted by tommy on 2006-02-10 19:23:29 +0000
Yup, no problem, so long as you've got USB support turned on in your kernel. It behaves just like a hard drive when its connected to the computer.
Posted by dawnbixtler on 2006-02-10 19:29:28 +0000
Can it store Adobe files too? I'm really into this iAudio shit...
Posted by tommy on 2006-02-10 21:17:05 +0000
It will store whatever you want, but it will only know how to play certain audio formats, which include at least MP3, Ogg and mp4. Not sure what else. It does, I believe, have a primitive text reader, which I've never used.
By Adobe files, do you mean PDF's? It won't know how to do anything with them except store them (which might be useful for transferring stuff between two computers that are not networked). It can't display them on screen.
I feel like an iAudio salesman.
Posted by dawnbixtler on 2006-02-10 23:28:26 +0000
I guess I did mean PDF files. Exactly, I just want to store them. Could be cool... I'm digging the iAudio more than iPod, so thanks for the info.
