The firing of judges

Looks like those questionable firings of federal judges a few months ago is going to hit the fan. I must admit I'm enjoying the downward spiral of the unethical members of Congress and Justice Department. Let's just quickly remove Sen. Pete Domenici and Alberto Gonzales, and move forward. "If, as it appears, Sen. Domenici pressured a sitting U.S. attorney to push a criminal case to benefit a political party, the ethics committee should take swift and harsh action." Hear Here!

The NY Times agrees. Gonzales is doing much more harm than good. Alberto, give up your job.

Oops. This goes all the way to the White House. "Two senior Justice officials, who didn't want to be named discussing the dismissals, tell NEWSWEEK that Kyle Sampson, Gonzales's chief of staff, developed the list of eight prosecutors to be fired last October—with input from the White House. In a recent statement, the White House said it approved the firings, but didn't sign off on specific names." Not surprising, as Bush and Co. are cementing the Most Corrupt Administration Award pretty solidly.

Of course, blame Harriet Miers.

"Kyle Sampson will not become the next Scooter Libby." - Sen. Charles Schumer. Fantastic. When a pinko Senator from New York is pulling for the neo-con VP's patsy, you know it's getting good. This (and you know I disdain linking to Andy Breitbart) reads a lot like politics; too much so for a judge to be writing, if you ask me.

The WS Opinion Journal distorts. Are they really comparing the routine judge transition from Bush Sr. to Clinton, with Bush's unprecedented political purge just past midway through the term? What's with the weird Hillary dig? This piece is so awkward, no wonder nobody attached a name to it.

Exhibit A in why Republicans are doomed: "But the Clintons did it!"

The list of papers calling for Gonzales to go grows. The whole thing is snow balling.

Another Republican Senator (Gordon Smith) calls for Gonzo to be gonzo. Worst back to back Attorney Generals ever?

Gonzales and Sampson are doing some finger-pointing? More Liberal Bias in the Media: This story is getting more attention than the House's vote to withdraw ...erm, "re-deploy"... from Iraq.

McCain says go. Also: Is there any chance that this country will elect a Mr. Magoo look-a-like? Signs point to "no".

Former Deputy Attorney General ('03-'05) James Comey is cleaning house today before the House Committee. 2 years ago I would never have believed that Comey was going to be Bush's worst nightmare.

From a TPM reader: Apparently during Comey's testimony today he said that one of the reasons McKay got himself in hot water with the DOJ heavyweights was because he was pushing for additional resources to investigate the murder of Tom Wales, who was an Assistant US Attorney in Seattle. Tom Wales was shot and killed in 2001. What nobody has talked about, and what you may not be aware of, is the fact that Tom Wales was extremely active in attempting to get tighter gun control laws passed here in Washington. Think about that for a second. A pro-gun control federal prosecutor was shot and killed. John McKay was agitating for more resources to bring his killer to justice. That pissed off DOJ, who apparently thought that McKay should spend his time going after bogus voter fraud prosecutions rather than solve the murder of a guy who was in favor of gun control. If you don't think the fact that Tom Wales' political views weren't taken into consideration by the higher ups at DOJ when they decided to punish McKay for fighting to find his killer, you haven't been paying attention to the way these guys have operated for the last 6 years. Every single thing they do is about politics, and the political views of those they help or hurt. The bottom line of this whole McKay firing could be summed up in this way: try to catch killers, you get fired. File BS charges of voter fraud, you keep your job. It's a slap in the face to every prosecutor in the country. It's our job to seek justice for those that aren't able to seek it for themselves. None of us should give a damn what the political views are of the victims we try to protect. It's beyond reprehensible for them to punish McKay for doing this. But for this administration, it's par for the course.

The oddest excuse ever: People in Attorney General's office were consulted about firing judges for putting law over politics, but they didn't know they were being consulted. hat tip TPM (again).

The testimony by Monica Lewin... Monica Goodling yesterday was a bit of a dud, don't you think? It did not uncover WH involvement. It did re-confirm what we know: Gonzales is a sleaze bag. Feel free to tamper with witnesses, the US Attorney General does! More of a peek into the sausage factory than anything else, I'd say.

First Contempt of Congress in 25 years, though over 140 Republican Representatives walked out. The president's chief of staff, Bolten, and former Supreme Court nominee, Miers, sure have us oozing with confidence, but don't be surprised if the AG doesn't press charges, as he's another Bush crony. Hey, why doesn't the House kill that warrantless wire-tap bill while the Republican Reps bail out?
