The ______________ immersion thread...

...in which we post candidates for the next immersion, post-Bowie. So: Pearl Jam Rush Elvis Costello Rolling Stones The Fall Neil Young Mike Ushinski Go!

Posted by pamsterdam on 2007-03-07 05:46:03 +0000
Ooooh, Elvis Costello... Ooooh, Neil Young... Ooooh, the Fall (uh!)... What about Joy Division - New Order? Housemartins - Beautiful South - Fatboy Slim?

Posted by G lib on 2007-03-07 14:29:14 +0000
*I like Elvis Costello. *I like the Rolling Stones. *I LOVE Mike Ushinski* ______________ *Chronicling any interesting artist through different influences and groups would be interesting-- perhaps starting with Yardbirds/Cream and then Yes? *I won't immerse myself in Rush. How about some obvious ones? *The Beatles. *Led Zepplin *Yes

MICHAEL JACKSON.

Posted by G lib on 2007-03-07 14:38:52 +0000
I like your Joy Division--New Order and Housemartins, etc. ideas.

How about Wu and Wu offshoots?

Posted by tendiamonds on 2007-03-07 14:49:43 +0000
You should do Rush just to educate this hater. As I was listening to Exit... Stage Left last night with my wife and children, I noted that it's a shame that Geddy Lee's voice and their residence in the realm of Fantasy Rock has estranged many a listener from such fabulous music.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2007-03-07 14:50:07 +0000
Kool Keith. For David Rees sake.

Posted by tommy on 2007-03-07 14:53:18 +0000
Prince? J. Geils? I second Neil Young, Elvis Costello, and the Rolling Stones.

Posted by G lib on 2007-03-07 15:08:50 +0000
I second Prince.

Posted by mahatma chani on 2007-03-07 15:12:05 +0000
J. Motherfucking Geils!

Posted by theduane on 2007-03-07 15:27:23 +0000
neil young or the rolling stones would probably be the most useful in terms of how and what they influenced what came after them.

Posted by theduane on 2007-03-07 15:28:32 +0000
I MEANT TO SAY "NEIL YOUNG OR THE ROLLING STONES WOULD PROBABLY BE THE MOST USEFUL IN TERMS OF HOW AND WHAT THEY INFLUENCED WHAT CAME AFTER THEM!!!!!!!!!!".

I third Prince. Not too psyched about the J Geils idea to be honest.

Posted by MF DU on 2007-03-07 16:06:14 +0000
Fantasy rock - LOL I heard 'the Trees' song the other night about all the oaks and maples getting along together as one. Funny stuff.

Ladewtangclan posits that everyone could use a little more WU in their lives...

Posted by MF DU on 2007-03-07 16:12:20 +0000
Frank Zappa, while a suicidal "immersion' project to undertake in terms of the amount of product, would be fun...

Posted by tendiamonds on 2007-03-07 16:27:24 +0000
Yet outstanding.

Posted by MF DU on 2007-03-07 16:29:34 +0000
no question - I just re-read my post and it sounds derogatory. It totally wasn't meant to be. Long Live Rush.

Posted by pamsterdam on 2007-03-07 16:48:45 +0000
My name is Prince. And I am funky.

Posted by pamsterdam on 2007-03-07 16:49:34 +0000
What about "bands with members who were born in New Hampshire"? Or is this starting to look like a Saturday Night Special sign-up list?

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-03-07 18:07:54 +0000
The Smiths Depeche Mode Sun Ra

Posted by pamsterdam on 2007-03-07 18:16:56 +0000
Yum!!!

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-03-07 18:29:46 +0000
Yes = no.

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-03-07 18:35:13 +0000
Is it better or worse to do an immersion of artists who have a ton of records? Bowie has somewhere in the 20's -- is that about right, too long, too short?

Posted by tendiamonds on 2007-03-07 18:40:54 +0000
Very few bands have a great album in them. Even fewer have more than one. More albums == more chaff. That said, Faith. No More. Two great albums. Two very interesting albums with a different vocalist. Some crap later that a lot of people seem to have liked.

Posted by doublegroundsuperfinemustard on 2007-03-07 19:03:34 +0000
I would love to see how many people could get through a proper Yes immersion. I know that I couldn't handle a Rush immersion. Maybe 15 years ago.

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-03-07 19:04:24 +0000
Once again, not a chance of a Yes immersion.

Posted by MF DU on 2007-03-07 19:05:26 +0000
I could get with a FNM immersion (surprise surprise)

Posted by tendiamonds on 2007-03-07 19:11:30 +0000
We could do a Yes immersion entirely on vinyl at my house. Rush, too. Oh! Speaking of my excellent vinyl collection, ZZ Top. (No, CC, I'm not going to suggest an UNGH! immersion, as that would be redundant with my life)

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-03-07 19:12:39 +0000
Every day is an UNGH! immersion for 10D.

Posted by virtue on 2007-03-07 19:18:13 +0000
Rolling Stones (duh! plus this way I might finally be able to convince certain members of C4RT to cover Under Assistant West Coast Promo Man when they hit LA). Neil Young, Elvins Costello, J. Geils, Prince, Kool Keith. I could do without yes or Pearl Jam.

Posted by MF DU on 2007-03-07 19:21:18 +0000
what kind of beer should I bring?

Posted by Miriam on 2007-03-07 19:24:46 +0000
Dare I say...Hank Williams? Johnny Cash? Definitely Prince or Michael Jackson. A Jackson Family immersion would be interesting.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2007-03-07 19:30:07 +0000
Yay! Support for Kool Keith!

Posted by tendiamonds on 2007-03-07 19:30:40 +0000
Root? Not $2/bottle sarsaparilla.

Still the only CD _ever_ in the van.

Posted by MF DU on 2007-03-07 19:42:32 +0000
GOOD CALL! I didn't think of Cash or Williams. A few more ideas: Ween Megadeth

No worries, I try not to drink stuff I can't (readily)spell.

MF DU: have I told you to get "Doc At the Radar Station" yet? It's a gem, and while we're here (cuz I doubt anybody else's going to jump on the Beefheart bandwagon), get up on your favorite file trading site and get "Lick My Decals Off, Baby" (or pick it up on vinyl, it's not out on CD, strangely enough).

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-03-07 20:34:43 +0000
Re: Beefheart.....Oooooh. Wow! The Merzbow immersion? Shoot me!

Posted by MF DU on 2007-03-07 20:50:34 +0000
I am going to Newbury (does Jackie need to know?) to get the new Stooges album - I will seek out some more Beefheart while there. I'll SLSK 'decals' when I get the chance.

Posted by Miriam on 2007-03-07 21:00:03 +0000
Melt Banana can only be good live. I think. Which is brilliant. Go if you haven't seen them. Violent Femmes George Michael...can encompass his other bands

Posted by MF DU on 2007-03-07 21:02:37 +0000
that was the reaction I was going for. chortle

Posted by MF DU on 2007-03-07 21:03:59 +0000
I would LOVE a G Michael immersion. I so hope his European tour expands to the USA. He doesen't get the credit he deserves.

Posted by mahatma chani on 2007-03-07 21:07:57 +0000
Just throwing it out there: C4RT's cover of "Freedom 90" is a polarizing issue amongst the act. I happen to think it's a great cover.

Posted by G lib on 2007-03-07 21:11:02 +0000
I second the Smiths, but I won't be into Depeche Mode. Sun ra, I haven't listened to.

Posted by MF DU on 2007-03-07 21:21:59 +0000
holy shit - is this "newer" material? I'm gonna have top get clearance for the MIT gig...

Posted by MF DU on 2007-03-07 21:28:25 +0000
10D's post on (Root) Beer set up a huge craving for said fluid, btw. Had to get up from my cube ,go downstairs, settle for the Mug(TM) (not that great). Still - it hit the spot. Root Beer can make a bad work day better...

Posted by doublegroundsuperfinemustard on 2007-03-07 23:42:24 +0000
Careful with that tone, young man. I've been known to immerse people in Yes when they least expect it or know who I am.

If we can reject the Gary Cherone years on principle, VAN Halen might be fun.

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-03-08 18:44:07 +0000
"Van Halen III" is so abysmal that it should be included on principle.

Might have to make a trip for that one.

Been there, seen that. But it's been a long time. Made a very cool painting afterwards that I gave to Mahatma Chani, but he lost it. We saw the show together. The next time they were in town, I tried to do a review for the Northeast Performer, but the ME wouldn't let me in on Press Pass and the show was sold out. I was not happy.

Posted by Rory_Stark on 2007-03-09 01:46:19 +0000
I'm down for a bunch of this, I mean, we've got quite some time to decide. What about a 5-7 album immersion? Then maybe a full catalog? Elvis' first five records are the nuts and "Dark Side" to the "The Final Cut" is pretty tits as well. Just a thought.

Posted by tendiamonds on 2007-03-09 14:09:04 +0000
My son and I began our Rush vinyl immersion last night, making our way through the first side of the eponymous album. Even with the exceptional track, "Finding my Way", the album is rather plebian. It's the type of work that you would expect from a moderate rock band, such as Led Zeppelin.
