Subar-me? Subaru!

Although I dispise CarMax, I may be getting a car there tomorrow. They have one within my price range that has everything I want, other than leather seats. Still, it could be a winner. Going for a test drive in the morning. While I'm over there, I'll swing by Home Depot Expo to pick out my new floor (just in case I'm going to need one from the mushroom debacle).

Put a Star of David after your signature on the purchase and sale agreement.

Carmax had a much lesser version of the car I wanted. May have found another one through a wholesaler, though. Here's what I just wrote to Car Talk: Dear Tom and Ray, I've owned a 1986 Volvo 240 GL since 1993, when I turned 18. The car started in Tennessee, and lived in the Boston area (Waltham, Brighton and Somerville) for 9 years. Now the car and I are back in Tennessee, and she's not looking nearly as good as I do after 15 years together. I've narrowed down my search for a replacement to Subaru wagons. I thought I found the one for me at a local dealership, but we couldn't agree on price, and one of the salesmen there started talking about "Jewing down the price" to another customer, which helped turn me off from shopping there. (I am Jewish and work for a Jewish organization and was seriously offended, not to mention ticked off.) I have since found a similar model car through a wholesaler. This car is one year older, but with the same mileage and features as the one at the dealership...for $1000 less. The only problem is that the Carfax report lists an accident, but I can't find out what happened to the car or what was repaired. It looks like it's in good shape, but I'm nervous that I might get a lemon in a state with sketchy lemon laws. Help! Should I buy the car anyway? I'll have my mechanic look at it, but should I be nervous that he might miss something? Tenuous in Tennessee
