Rumble picks

Slim pickings for talent this year. You can find me at the club (Harper's Ferry) on Sunday, Tuesday after rehearsal and Thursday. You can listen to all the bands here. My picks: The Silver Lining, Casavetes, Protokoll, UV Protection, Township, Eli "Paperboy" Reed. Wild Cards: Aloud and The Self-Righteous Brothers

Posted by MF DU on 2007-03-29 17:35:15 +0000
Self-Righteous Brothers have the best band name upon first impression. (In that 'John Cougar Concentration Camp' kind of mode)

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-03-29 17:34:15 +0000
I'll bite: Appreciation Post, Cassavettes, Protokoll, UV Protection, Meet the Day, Vital Might, with Baker and Six Day Slide wc'ing it.

Posted by mahatma chani on 2007-03-29 17:35:20 +0000
Agreed, and one of the more interesting bands in the contest.

Posted by mr. mister on 2007-03-29 22:22:31 +0000
UV Protection will never win it but they should.

Posted by tgl on 2007-03-29 22:31:48 +0000
Maybe my first viewing of UV Protection will be at the Rumble.

Posted by mahatma chani on 2007-03-30 11:30:50 +0000
While UV Protection lacks songs/musicianship, they've got a great stage setup/gimmick and they're one of the wierdest (yet memorable) bands you've ever seen. Plus they're girls. Those are "winning" traits. If they don't mail it in, I don't see how they don't win that night. Having said that, aparently the Self-Righteous Brothers do the ludicrous stage thing too. Plus they've got some auxiliary Apollo Sunshine and Reverend Glasseye folks, and the Rumble has always been kind to "scene veterans."

Posted by G lib on 2007-03-30 13:43:54 +0000
It's true. UV needs a new album. However, would I make an attempt to buy it? I tried to buy their current (three year old album) once-- sent in a check and everything, but didn't get any response at all, a cashed check or a returned letter or a CD.

Posted by mahatma chani on 2007-03-30 13:50:41 +0000
I think they've got two now. Caveat emptor, by the by.

Posted by MF DU on 2007-03-30 13:51:43 +0000
Mail order is funny that way sometimes - I just oredered a cd of a California musician I enjoy - 1 Month - no response - I followup, get an almost instant response with a package in the following 3 businsess days with the wrong cd. grrrr.

Pulling for Township

Posted by Miriam on 2007-04-04 14:47:42 +0000
How did the Mid East lose the venue? Was it getting too big? What's the dish?

Posted by ConorClockwise on 2007-04-04 14:51:54 +0000
Shred "pulled out" as they say.

Posted by MF DU on 2007-04-04 14:57:38 +0000
Not a very effective protection method.

Posted by Miriam on 2007-04-04 15:05:03 +0000
Has it affected the tone of the competition? Were there grumblings about the Rumblings?

Posted by Earth Crisis Face on 2007-04-04 15:12:21 +0000
The kids have to stay away from promiscuous sex for A BETTER SCENE!

Posted by Miriam on 2007-04-04 15:15:41 +0000
Wow...I didn't know tatooed men were so into highly groomed eyebrows. That takes a lot of maintenance.

Posted by mahatma chani on 2007-04-04 15:28:27 +0000
Shred was "let go" from the Mid East, hence the Harper's move.

Posted by Miriam on 2007-04-04 15:47:20 +0000
guess they made a lot of changes in the last two years

Posted by G lib on 2007-04-04 16:35:14 +0000
Did not know that. For bringing pre-teens into the club?

Posted by mahatma chani on 2007-04-04 16:39:17 +0000
No, disputes over money with Saters.

Posted by tgl on 2007-04-04 17:18:00 +0000
Don't be a Saters-hater! . . . Just a dumb rhyme, I don't mean anything by it.

Township to the semis!

Posted by mahatma chani on 2007-04-08 17:28:16 +0000
Still it's Eli's contest to lose. I think the Aloud/Self Righteous Brothers are loooking good as Wild Cards. Second round picks to come.

Posted by mahatma chani on 2007-04-09 15:51:02 +0000
Going 5 for 8 into the semis. Picks: The Silver Lining, Eli "Paperboy" Reed, wild card: Township.

Posted by cdubrocker on 2007-04-10 05:09:34 +0000
I'm pulling for the Silver Lining.

Posted by Epoisses on 2007-04-10 07:04:26 +0000
Whatever.

Vote Sanjaya

Township to the finals! (Though Eli's drummer was the best thing I've seen all year.)

Wierd Rumble finals. Projection: Baker wins, Township places, Indefinite Article shows.

Posted by ConorClockwise on 2007-04-18 06:02:37 +0000
But will 'BCN ever play any of their tunes?

Posted by Miriam on 2007-04-18 15:26:12 +0000
won't they have to without all that juicy payola out there?

Posted by MF DU on 2007-04-18 15:27:42 +0000
Viva La Eliot Spitzer!

Posted by mahatma chani on 2007-04-18 16:42:30 +0000
Well... when we won, we got like maybe 5-10 spins in the regular rotation. Granted Robby and Andy Hicks were probably the ones responsible for most of those spins. Shred for the rest of them. So what does it mean? Friends help friends. Is any of these bands friends with BCN? I know Abe from Indefinite Article plays hockey with Shred, so...? Remember the Rumble is a free advertisment for WBCN. The least they can do for the winner is play them a couple times.

The Metro asked for a few words of advice from last year's Rumble winner to this year's contestants. Here was my article (it'll probably be edited down for the Friday edition): ---------- Rumble finalists prognostication By All-World Lee “Big Game” Bronson As a member of last years Rumble winning/time-traveling outfit The Campaign for Real-Time, I’m going to tell you what tonight’s contestants are going on to do in the future. The 2007 winner Baker got hit by the Rumble Curse the hardest, breaking up a scant five months later. No matter. Nicole Boudreau went onto internet cult-status with a series of her entertaining YouTube workout videos. Township rides their second place showing to Bonaroo fame and fortune. Then for some inexplicable reason, they alienate all their fans by doing some weird Brian Eno-ish laptronica on their third album. However the single biggest winner (despite their third place showing) of the 2007 WBCN Rumble was The Indefinite Article, whose manager pulled off a smashing coup by securing them the role of “house band” in the fraternity party scene of Will Ferrell’s megahit “Old School 2: Masters & Johnsons.”
