RIP Norman Mailer
Male chauvinism aside, he was an entertaining dude.
I don't think I ever read one of his books in its entirety, but his newspaper/magazine articles were fantastic, and his account of the Ali/Foreman fight in "When We were Kings" is an unbounded joy.

In 1998 I was in the one and only book club I've ever done. I got the first crack at suggesting a book, and we did "In Cold Blood," and it worked out great. Alex Zavracky posited "Armies of the Night" second, and hardly anybody finished it as virtually everyone was put off by Mailer's me-first writing style. The club was completely killed when Jake Schulz was convinced we could read "Light In August." Everybody hated each other after two unreadable books.
Having said all that, "Armies of the Night" went back onto the nightstand and will get a look-see hopefully before the end of the year.
Have I ever mentioned how much I loved "When We Were Kings?"

Bullshit. You were in the ill-fated Ulysses book club a few years back, too.

Oh yeah... Kind of easy to forget about the ill-fated "Ulysess" seeing as I went to not a single meeting.
