I really have to disagree on this one. Steely Dan is rock music played by people who hate rock music. They are like fingernails on a chalkboard for me. But more arrogant.

That's the thing though - talented people who hate rock music playing rock music are bound to do something wonderful - and IMHO - so the Dan has.

But, I think I'm right on this rule of thumb: When making a rock record, you should <b>not</b> spend multiple days in the studio working on the same guitar solo. You <b>should</b> spend about an hour on the solo, then use the rest of the time to snort coke off high school girls' asses or something.
