Of Neighborhood Exploration and Ticks

I decided that I wouldn't sit around all day anymore on the weekends, so on Saturday I went to the gym and walked more in an hour on the treadmill than I had all day on Friday (by a LOT), and yesterday I was determined to find a way to the bridge to the neighborhood greenway. After much exploring through modest brush between the Army training center and the houses with the barkiest dogs, I finally figured out how to get to the bridge that links my neighbor hood to the back of the public golf course, and the greenway that spans a couple of miles...across the creek from my house. The walk was great! Lots of people out with each other, their kids, their dogs, and lots of guys golfing with their buddies (didn't see any women on the course). Got home all happy and sweaty and having walked about 4 miles, made lunch, chilled on the couch for a bit and finally hopped in the shower so that I could get to a 2:45pm showing of "Mean Streets" (part of the Noir Film Festival). It had occured to me while trapsing through the brush that there might be snakes or other animals I didn't want to disturb, but I hadn't thought about bugs too much. It being very early spring here (one day it's in the 30's, the next it's in the 70's), I didn't bother to put on any spray. In the shower, I was washing my legs and found a scab on the back of my left thigh...just above the knee. The funny thing was, I couldn't feel the scab coming off my skin, or figure out how I got a cut there. Finally, I got the scab off, and the last bit of it smarted. I looked at what I'd scratched off, and it had legs!!! I kind of freaked out at that point, since I live alone and have a lot of dark hair and no one to check my head for other ticks. Luckily, I remembered that I had a hat on, and checked the logical places (base of the neck, behind the ears, then did a thorough feel test). No other ticks that I can find so far, but I was careful to stick to the path this morning. I think that was my first tick. I hope it's my last!

Yikes! Maybe you could advertise on Craig's List for someone to come over and give you a full-body tick-check? Um... or would that be weird? :o) Any cute boys around who might be tempted into doing the job for you? One likes to be sure... Mustn't take any risks where ticks are concerned... In all seriousness, though - I reckon you're fine. Ugh, but SO creepy that your scab had legs. EWWW! You're so lucky that you're a scab-picker. I would've just put some calendula cream on it and forgotten about it. EWWWWWWWW!

I'm sure I could find plenty of candidates on Craig's List to check me for ticks...just not sure I want them in my house, or touching me. Not any known candidates nearby, either. Unfortunately. Maybe I'll meet one on my walks around the greenway! Saw a few cute fellas this morning. I don't normally pick scabs, but this was in a spot I couldn't see easily...and it didn't feel normal. I'm paranoid about all of my moles anyway, so if I feel something odd I usually check it out. Just lucky that it hadn't really dug in yet. Not so lucky that it crawled up my pants. For a second, I thought about calling my sister to search me, but then I remembered that she usually laughs at me when I freak out about bodily harm.

Miriam, I would check you for ticks and not laugh. For reals.

Thank you. But, these walks are to help me feel comfortable with anyone searching me for ticks without laughing! Definitely working, but not fast enough. It's SO much easier to pack on the pounds than melt them away...without surgical or medicinal help.

Tell me about it! You and me both, cutie.

Sorry about the tick, but I'm proud of you for engaging in outdoor recreation/exercise. Wear bug spray on your pant legs, is what I'd suggest. The yuckiness of the ticks wears off somewhat as you gather more experience with them, but the danger of Lyme disease is a real concern. (Do they have Lyme disease in TN?)

The yuckiness of the ticks wears off somewhat as you gather more experience with them, I have to disagree with chippy on this one-- I've come in contact with many ticks in my life, and am still freaked out when I find one on my person. Probably because as a kid I found one buried in the skin of my scalp during my weekly shower-- removing it was a traumatic experience for both my mother and me. But I'm also proud of you for your walking habit. For me, there's no better way to watch spring appear, slowly in its small daily increments. It makes my heart happy in two ways at once!

I'll have to pick up some spray. Is there an enviro-friendly one? Or am I better off with deet? They most definitely have Lyme disease here...as well as West Nile Virus. And since I live across the street from a creek, I am used to mosquitoes, but can't imagine getting used to ticks. On a canoe trip at camp, I had a leech on my thumb. That was less traumatic than the tick since someone else scraped it off me with a HUGE knife.

Dreading finding one on my head was why I freaked out. I just know there's one up there somewhere! Really trying to keep up the walking. I've noticed that I'm more of a grump when I don't do it. And watching the birds in the morning and the buds coming out on the trees is incredible. The daffodils are really out all over the place!

Me, too! But I just emailed him anyway. Never can tell. Great sleuthing, G lib!
