Costume Ideas

So, Wednesday night, I saw "Semi-Pro," and I'm glad that I didn't have to pay for the ticket, but did manage to laugh several times, and was completely inspired by the costumes they had throughout the movie. It got me thinking, which is always dangerous, and I've decided that I want to start making my Halloween costume. Of course, I'm also thinking about Purim, which is next week, but don't think I have time to pull it off in time for that. So, my idea is to make a Shooting Star costume: foam star, covered in sparkly material with a train (like a wedding dress) of sparkly stuff for the tail of the star, and a gun holster with water guns or cap guns...thus: Shooting Star! Hopefully I'll actually finish it by October.

Oh no, was Semi-Pro not that great? I love Will Ferrell. Despite having seen his scary chest hair. Shudder "C'mon, we're streakin'!" I love your idea, and you could totally finish it by October. My friend Stef makes an old Hollywood-style gown (often complete with built-in structural undergarments, boning, etc) for her Oscars party each year, and starts about 4 months in advance and generally has it completed with a week or so to spare. I'm wondering about covering the foam with cheesecloth, which might hold the sparkles better and hold the shape?

I think this costume will be WAY less complicated than that. I don't have a sewing machine (or know how to use one), so it will take a while to pull together, but kind of want it to look rough (at least on the train). May have to invest in a silver leotard and tights to make it just right!

It is never too early to begin planning your Halloween costume! I like the "shooting" pun.

Thank you! I'm all about pun or double meaning costumes. The more conceptual the better.

Senior year in HS, I dressed as Jesus. I was crucified to a cardboard cross, and was wearing a sun dress. Sign hung around my neck said "Jesus was a cross dresser." They kicked me out of the Billerica Mall. My only idea so far this year is Mr. T. No idea how to pull off the gold chains, though.

Gold-colored brocade, as used in curtain-making? I actually saw a kid wearing that in a non-ironic way this week. NY Yankees baseball cap, baggy jeans, big t-shirt, and gold-colored brocade around his neck. Halloween came to Holland early this year.

I'm sure if you ask nicely, MC might let you borrow the set that he stole from me that I 'acquired' at BJ's disco party a few years back.

I like it! Early trial run of rolled-up scrap fabric went well. Thanks!

If it includes that sequined jacket you found in the trash while we walked home from Central Sq. late one night...no thanks.

Propagandatour gave it away. Needless to say, I was very upset.
