maiden voyage

CTP and I took the Day Off out for her maiden voyage today--the first paddle of the season. Launched at Constitution Beach in East Boston, paddled out the cove to the Winthrop bridge, and under the bridge (fighting both tide and wind) to get into Belle Isle Marsh. Then turned around and came back (riding both tide and wind), practicing unusual strokes as we came. All in all, a good time. It was also the maiden voyage for CTP's first handmade paddle--the ash one with the straight shaft. He found it rather annoyingly heavy; I kind of liked it.

Pictures? Sounds like fun. Was it cold?

Can you really put a canoe named Day Off in the water on a Sunday?

Posted by pchippy on 2008-04-07 00:16:55 +0000
We were thoroughly bundled up, in multiple layers of synthetic fibers, with hats and gloves and so on. I got uncomfortably warm. On the other hand, if we had happened to capsize, we would have been uncomfortably cold in about five seconds, even in all that clothing.

Is a Sunday not a day off? Left to my own devices, I probably would have gone for Brant, but G Lib's dad used to have a boat named the Day Off, and I'm too sentimental not to revive the name. My parents' canoes are the Tyler II and the Osprey.

Posted by tgl on 2008-04-07 00:42:20 +0000
Yes, I guess it is. What's osprey from? A number (OK, two of three total) of my Marblehead sailing junkets have been on the Dawntreader.

Posted by pchippy on 2008-04-07 10:33:35 +0000
That's a good name too. As for Osprey, it's in honor of the ospreys that nest each year in the top of a big pine tree by the side of the cove.

Sounds like a great time. I'm not sure why I was so cold this weekend - Just felt really raw out there to me...

Only if you regularly work on Sundays. "Day off" is generally used when referring to a day you take off from work, on a day you would normally be scheduled to work.

Posted by pchippy on 2008-04-07 16:08:42 +0000
I'm not sure that that's true. People very frequently say things like "Mondays are my day off"--meaning that that's the day they normally don't work.

Posted by virtue on 2008-04-07 17:41:36 +0000
True, when people say "Mondays are my day off," they mean that they don't normally work on Mondays, but I think FC's observation remains valid--the opposition of "day off" to work is created because Monday is a working day for most people.

Posted by TheFullCleveland on 2008-04-07 18:13:42 +0000
In an amazing coincidence, I bumped into an old coworker (with apologies to CTP) of mine who does not work on Mondays, and when I asked her what she was doing all the way over at the CambridgeSide Galeria when she works at NEC, she said: "Monday is my day off!" Virtue has it right, I think.

Watch out you too-- Chips can change the dictionary to reflect his own opinion with just a few key strokes. It's a power that can be used for both good AND evil.

I was working on Sunday. CTP and Pchippy had the day off. I'm not sure I see the problem here... ...apart from, of course, that I had to work yesterday.

Pssst.... "Watch out you two". Sorry, G.

There's no nail. He's just going to town on the frame with a mallet.

What I've learned from that page is that if I turn Christian, I'll have access to big boobs.

Somebody's adbot needs a new logarithm or two. I love ongoing proof that my job is not threatened by the interwebs.

What I've learned from this page is that if I re-up my Christianity, I'll have access to old, boring squares.

How do you get certified christian? and who decides?

Posted by TheFullCleveland on 2008-04-08 20:09:51 +0000
That's pretty awesome that they're guaranteeing your safety by way of Christianity! Safe from bodily/psychological harm, or from offending religions?

Posted by tendiamonds on 2008-04-08 20:11:53 +0000
Clearly not safe from being bonked on the head by BIG BOOBS.

JDate definitely doesn't certify Jewish on their website!

What I want to know is, if it's free for Christians to join, bow much do they charge athiests?

Posted by G lib on 2008-04-08 20:15:18 +0000
I have no idea, but you can become a Certified Christian Sex Therapist apparently.

Posted by G lib on 2008-04-08 20:19:06 +0000
But do non-jews join jdate?

You apparently haven't spent as much time on Nashville Craigslist as I have. It's almost always the first thing they say on each post...

I think there's a whole section just for gentiles.

Lots. Especially here...since there are not so many single Jews around.

...that they're Christian?

So I *just* got Tyler II. I'm hanging up my quit witted hat now.

Posted by G lib on 2008-04-09 13:28:22 +0000
Yes. How many people in the northeast talk about their religion in their personal ads? I guess you have more people down there that are actual "Christians" rather than "Well, it's complicated-- I'm culturally Jewish, but truly a questioning agnostic who attends a unitarian church and studies Buddhism and Confucianism in my spare time." like people in the northeast.
