All-Purpose NBA Finals thread

Coming out of the first round: I got the Celtics, Cavaliers, Magic and Pistons in the East. For the West, I got the Lakers, Jazz, Suns and Mavericks. After the second round we'll have Celtics going up against the Pistons, Lakers up against the Suns. For the NBA Finals: we'll have a Celtics-Lakers matchup that, unfortunately, doesn't decide a winner as a 8.9 earthquake sends Southern California into the ocean during game 4. Schedule is here.

Lorbering: Like the new house ads. Specifically this one capturing Garnett's All-Celtics-All-The-Time attitude. (note the straying from the scrip by dropping "Bird" in this ad): Also, Radiohead spotting in this one:

I HAVE: round 1 going to the Celtics, Wizards, Magic & Pistons in the east Lakers, Jazz, Spurs & Hornets in the west. round 2 - Celtics & Pistons in east, Lakers & Spurs in west round 3 - Celtics & Lakers Finals - Celtics in 6.

Those ads are fantastic. They make me want to watch basketball. Can we get a re-enactment of the second ad with dyedon8 and theduane, please?

Posted by dyedon8 on 2008-04-17 16:56:54 +0000
Oh, my.

Posted by pamsterdam on 2008-04-17 18:15:09 +0000
Do it.

Posted by MF DU on 2008-04-18 13:47:42 +0000
Oh, I'm doing it alright. I might as well get a friggin swoosh™ tattoo.

Posted by ConorClockwise on 2008-04-18 18:03:35 +0000
I Have: East - Celts, Pistons, Magic, Cavs (1,2,3,4 = boring, I know) West - Lakers, Hornets, Suns, Rockets (wish I had the stones to take Denver over LA) The Lakers beat the Suns in 5 games. The C's take Detroit in 6, and the Lakers in 7 as Red Auerbach's dead body is dropped from the Garden's rafters onto a seated Kobe Bryant during a 20 second timeout with 14 seconds to play...

This series is sickening. I thought you had to be in the league for more than say five years before you get every gift phantom foul call.

Posted by mahatma chani on 2008-05-04 17:59:51 +0000
Well... that's more like it.

Posted by ConorClockwise on 2008-05-05 05:24:40 +0000
Gruesome defense. So sick. I turned it on at about 26-13, and left halfway thru the 3rd at 68-35 or so. Stunning.

Posted by tgl on 2008-05-07 00:13:24 +0000
G1: Boston, Cleveland Cavs have scored 14 to the C's 5 here in the third quarter.

Posted by tgl on 2008-05-07 00:13:46 +0000
14-7 now.

Posted by tgl on 2008-05-07 00:20:48 +0000
14-9 to bring the overall tally to 51-50. Celtics will finish strong in the Old Fleetcenter, don't you think?

Posted by tgl on 2008-05-07 01:09:48 +0000
Wow, felt close here on the computer screen.

Posted by mahatma chani on 2008-05-20 09:33:10 +0000
Just sayin', if it's not going to be Celtics/Lakers, please let it be Pistons/Spurs.

Posted by mahatma chani on 2008-05-29 13:55:13 +0000
Wow. Probably a little too close for comfort.

Posted by ConorClockwise on 2008-05-29 17:35:48 +0000
Ugly game, except for the W.

This is Boston, Not L.A.

Bring it on Kobe

ESPN reposted it, so will I. An excerpt from Curt Schilling's blog detailing game two: "This one stunned me a little bit. Who doesn't know Kobe Bryant right? I only know what I have heard, starting awhile back with the entire Shaq debacle. I don't really have an opinion one way or the other on or about him other than to know that people feel he might be one of the 4-5 greatest players to ever lace it up. What I do know is what I got to see up close and hear, was unexpected. From the first tip until about 4 minutes left in the game I saw and heard this guy bitch at his teammates. Every TO he came to the bench pissed, and a few of them he went to other guys and yelled about something they weren't doing, or something they did wrong. No dialog about "hey let's go, let's get after it" or whatever. He spent the better part of 3.5 quarters pissed off and ranting at the non-execution or lack of, of his team. "...as a fan I was watching the whole thing, Kobe, his teammates and then the after-effects of conversations. He'd yell at someone, make a point, or send a message, turn and walk away, and more than once the person on the other end would roll eyes or give a 'whatever dude' look."

Schilling's pontifications grow a bit tiresome after awhile. Having said that though, I'm not really a big Kobe fan.

Posted by mr. mister on 2008-06-12 20:11:36 +0000
Kobe may be a bitch but he totally gets to the basket. Pierce seems like a bit of a whiner too. Every time someone touches him, he looks like a little kid. "he hit me man?" But that said Pierce is a total clutch player and some coach probably drilled those theatrics into his brain when he was in Basketball Camp in LA or something. I am totally into this series. The last game wasn't as exciting and we lost but it has been quite a ride.

OMG I HOPE IT'S A MONSTER GAME TONITE!!!!

Posted by tgl on 2008-06-13 01:19:55 +0000
Bryant hasn't gone to the basket much tonight (and it's 45-23 Lakers right now).

Posted by TheFullCleveland on 2008-06-13 01:50:10 +0000
So far, this is a tough game to watch.

Posted by tgl on 2008-06-13 02:28:11 +0000
The third quarter was easy to watch.

So very glad I stayed up...came awfully close to calling it quits early. Magnificient.

Worst 1st quarter deficit ever --> Victory! Outstanding!

Posted by TheFullCleveland on 2008-06-13 18:23:01 +0000
Allen's game-closing 1-on-1 with Vujacic was priceless! POW!

Posted by dyedon8 on 2008-06-16 03:15:23 +0000
Nine seconds left in game 5: this game has been fucking brutal. Ugh.

Posted by mahatma chani on 2008-06-16 14:34:43 +0000
Stay focus everybody... No way Lakers are winning two games in Boston. Not a chance. Besides, last night's game was officiated by one of the refs the FBI are investigating accusations that he threw games. Not that I'm blaming the officials or anything, but Simmons said it first: Disney makes millions more dollars if it goes to games 6 and 7.

Posted by tgl on 2008-06-17 03:11:52 +0000
I agree. The Lakers couldn't close out this game *at home* after having a double digit lead on numerous occasions. If KG could hit those clutch free throws, and Bryant hadn't fouled Pierce to "strip" the ball, the game might have ended differently. Anything can happen, but this is Boston's series to lose. And they aren't into losing series right about now.

Charlie's Kitchen circa: 10:30 or so.

Laker sighting: last night at the Four Seasons. They seemed in good spirits, except for Kobe. He was the only Laker (aside from the Suits) who did not carry his own luggage into the hotel. Also the only Laker who totally ignored the media and people gathered to see them (not a large crowd).

Posted by MF DU on 2008-06-17 22:42:45 +0000
The Suits. (Fuck 'em)

Posted by tgl on 2008-06-18 01:39:11 +0000
24 minutes left. Will the Lakers show up?

Awesome. I told TFC's "insider" story to everyone I saw today. My Dad (via cellphone) was wicked psyched. These two little old ladies I met today at Connemara were jumping up and down and exclaiming about how much they hate "the bloody Lakers". Hilarious.

L: Pre-written or freestyled?

Posted by mahatma chani on 2008-06-24 19:34:38 +0000
Supposedly freestyled, but I hear a lot of rappers have unreleased material which they throw out as if it's improvised on the fly.

Posted by ConorClockwise on 2008-06-25 17:07:12 +0000
Absolutely free-style, he fucks up plenty. If that was written I'd be shocked, even though it is Shaq. Shaq's rap career = worse than Jordan's baseball career.

Posted by mr. mister on 2008-06-27 19:22:08 +0000
the chorus slays me every time.

Posted by MF DU on 2008-06-27 21:54:14 +0000
And if you thought the music career was bad, remember when he mixed it with film? Aye Carumba.
