Baseball milestones
So congrats to Manny for passing Gehrig and McGriff on the all-time home runs list. I noticed that Gary Sheffield is only a couple behind Manny. Question for the peanut gallery: Is Sheffield a Hall of Famer?

Not if Jim Rice isn't.
I don't think Sheffield was ever the most feared hitter in the game. He is someone who is really good, and has stuck around for a long time, and I don't think that's enough.

Sheffield's career numbers:
2530 hits, 1545 runs, 481 HR's, 1578 RBI's, 244 SB's, .296 BA
sound like hall of fame numbers to me.
Jim Rice's Career numbers:
2452 hits, 1249 runs, 382 HR's, 1451 RBI's, 58 SB,s .298 BA
Keeping in mind that Rice SHOULD be a HOF'er, but his shitty relationship with the voters has likely been what has kept him out, I think Sheffield will be in the Hall, although, maybe not on the first ballot.

Neither Manny nor Chef ever got an MVP, though both got some votes in multiple years.
Chef's in, I think, if Rice is. (Course, Rice never got a ring, either.)

Remember in like 93 or 94 when the Padres 3-4-5 hitters were Gwynn, Sheffield, McGriff? Man.

I think it was Gammons who predicted the same for ESPN. Hope so.
