What were you listening to 15 years ago?

This may very well be the worst video I've ever seen, but... ...I'm having a herbally-enhanced stroll down memory lane. Ah - ManRay, the dj who used to be in Flock of Seagulls (no, seriously), and the jumpy-crouchy dance. Bless.

At this point in 1993? I was listening to Steeleye Span, Leonard Cohen, Lyle Lovett's Large Band, and Kate Bush.

1993: Jawbox, Screeching Weasel, Embrace, Pavement, fIREHOSE.

I'm really enjoying this - thanks! In '93 I'd only just started listening to American indie/hardcore, so I was still heavily in my anglo-gothica/androgeny/psychedelia phase: the Cure Depeche Mode Sisters of Mercy Dead Can Dance Current 93 the Chameleons Morrissey Pulp Suede Robyn Hitchcock Syd Barrett Plus scary/funny German industrial (see video above). He's got a hold of your legs and he drags you to the bottom of the bog (boop boop) the bog (boop boop). Taking over the Indy 500 show, combined with my brief romance with a Fugazi/Bad Brains/Bad Religion fan, revolutionised my music taste. Big year, '93.

Pavement, Primus, Teenage Fanclub, Dinosaur Jr., Jesus and Mary Chain, and, oh yeah: The Swirlies

Posted by virtue on 2008-04-27 14:02:45 +0000
mmm, teenage fan club... In '93 I was listening to a lot of 60's ska, blue beat, etc. (had my own ska show on the school radio show--totally lacked the planning/discipline necessary to be a dj, now glad i was the dj and not a listener, and glad the cats from the wads weren't calling me), and my roommate's older brother had just sent her Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville which became a big favorite, 'tho then I had to listen to Exile on Main Street again to see if I could figure out what the fuck was going on in her head (still can't, still love both albums). And ween. push those little daisies, dean and gene, push 'em. Also the year that I had a new beau and we both made each other mix tapes at the same time that unbeknownst to us started with 500 miles--clearly we were destined to be together (for at least two weeks). I've since lost his, which is sad, because it was pretty awesome. It also included a man needs a maid as the first song on the second side. I think mine might have had girl I got a date on it--in retrospect it seems clear that two weeks was pushing it.

Biiiiig belly laughs on that one, virtue. Love it. My '93 dalliance (with the aforementioned Fugazi/Bad Brains/Bad Religion fan) was also fairly star-crossed. One afternoon early on, he played '1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours' for me, saying he "just knew" I'd like Green Day (this was, btw, the year before they 'broke'). Breathless with 'Say Anything'-level romantic euphoria, I asked how, how could he have known I would like them? He looked up at me from rolling a fresh doobie and said, "Because they suck." Um, yeah.

Wow. Doc Hopper + Hussy + Fly Spinach Fly = time warp complete.

Iron Butterfly (red light on while playing in the dorm room and blowing smoke through a bounce tube), Primus, Jimi Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Beatles, Steely Dan, Public Enemy, BDP, Slick Rick, I guess I listened to way too much WZLX as a kid.

Posted by MF DU on 2008-04-27 19:30:40 +0000
Careful, Pamsterdam. Leave Sinkhole out of these equations at your own peril.

Posted by mahatma chani on 2008-04-27 21:15:02 +0000
Wow... kinda forgot about Faith No More ("Angel Dust" was a constant) and Fishbone (they dropped "Give a Monkey a Brain and He'l Swear He's the Center of the Universe" in 1993).

Posted by MF DU on 2008-04-27 21:58:41 +0000
what was the Swirlies cd that was on TAANG! that had a picture of a little spock -like jr with the word bubble of "Fuck, No" screen-printed on the face of the cd? That was a dorm room fave of Glumac and I. Also: Juliana Hatfield, Lemonheads, Bob Marley (I'm thinking specifically of the 4 cd 'Songs of Freedom' Box set - I listened to the first cd of mostly Marley Jamaicain ska like it was going out of style, although I also really liked the dub version on the box set of 'Coming In From The Cold' - great tune), Quicksand, Hal Wilner comps (W.S. Burroughs / Sonic Youth 'Spare Ass Annie' thing, as well as the 'Weird Nightmare' comp Wilner put together paying tribute to Charles Mingus using Harry Partch Instruments, Chuck D, Henry Rollinds et. al) Ministry, Material, Dead Kennedys Was I still listening to the Bosstones in '93? I suspect that I was, but maybe not as much as if it was 91 or 92.

(in alphabetical order...) Bikini Kill, Blur, Christmas, Dead Milkmen, Doc Hopper, Duck Duck, The Dwarves, Gin Blossoms, Goo Goo Dolls, Hater*, Jerky Boys**, Liz Phair, Mudhoney, The Muffs, Redd Kross, R.E.M., The Tragically Hip, Urge Overkill, Voivod. * which is weird, because this is the only thing I've ever liked by anyone associated with Mother Love Bone or Soundgarden. Still, "Who Do I Kill?"... awesome. ** LOTS of Jerky Boys.

Posted by MF DU on 2008-04-27 22:26:21 +0000
Voivod! Tommy Is Pretty Much Right About Stuff. 'Nothingface' and 'Dimension Hatross' were always personal faves of mine.

Posted by tommy on 2008-04-27 22:50:15 +0000
I thought 'Outer Limits' was underrated, too, which was '93 or so. One of the weirdest shows I ever saw was Voivod headlining the Paradise in 1989/90 over Soundgarden. Opening band was Faith No More. Soundgarden and FNM were just on the cusp of getting big... the set order would have been reversed if the show were 3 months later.

Posted by MF DU on 2008-04-28 00:59:47 +0000
Sounds like a cool show. Infinitely jealous.

Posted by pamsterdam on 2008-04-28 04:06:19 +0000
No, you'd better watch it, DU. I didn't include Sinkhole because they are my favorite NH band of all time (presuming you'll allow me the conundrum-creating AGs in the Sinkhole timeline), and easily transcended the UNH student scene. The other 3 I haven't even given a passing thought since, say, 1996. I am shocked and aghast that you'd think anything else.

Posted by dyedon8 on 2008-04-28 04:43:10 +0000
Well, that and the fact that Sinkhole didn't really start to pick up steam until 1994.

Posted by pamsterdam on 2008-04-28 05:09:32 +0000
Sha-ZAM! Ka-POW! Welcome to the Sinkhole's Biggest Fan Smackdown, where dyedon8 has just delivered a killer blow to both the until-now undefeated MF DU and the featherweight (ed. note: ahem) newcomer to the ring, pamsterdam. Can either of them come back from this? MF DU may have some fight left in him, but pamsterdam is certainly down for the count.

Bah, I've always liked my men the same way I like my chocolate: dark(-humored) & bitter. :o) Plus I think he was still peeved about BGM taking the piss out of him when they first met: BGM: So what music do you listen to? The boy: Uh, you know, Bad Brains... um, Bad Religion... BGM: Bad Company? Bad English? Do you only listen to bad music? Sounds like it. Hell hath no fury like a Will whose Grace just got herself a new boy-toy. At the least the boy's crack about Green Day was delivered with a devilish smirk.

Posted by virtue on 2008-04-28 12:43:28 +0000
I don't understand--what's BGM?

Posted by pamsterdam on 2008-04-28 12:47:14 +0000
Sorry, that's Big Gay Mark. I felt like he needed a nickname... he named himself Hexeba during high school, but I'm not sure that still works. He was at the Burren when you & I last met up.

The disc with the "Fuck, No" cartoon was "Blonder Tongue Audiobaton." Aparently, the cartoonist is the drummer for current marginal Matador Records band Lavender Diamond. Whoever wrote the Swirlies wikipedia entry has a nice wry sense of humor.

lots of R.E.M., Poi Dog Pondering, Edie Brickell, Paul Simon, Drivin'N'Cryin', Beastie Boys, Violent Femmes, Dead Milkmen, C&C Music Factory, Rupaul, Green Day, Medeski Martin & Wood, Colonel Bruce Hampton & the Aquarium Rescue Unit, traditional Israeli music, Cypress Hill, James, Seal, Madonna I'm sure there's MUCH more that I can't remember right now, but that was freakin' 15 years ago! Definitely went to at least one Sinkhole show at the Mid-East in 1994/5. I think Tracy Bonham was on a bill somewhere around then, too.

Spring '93? I had a new roommate, his music collection wasn't too dissimilar from the previous roommate's, except he did not fall asleep listening to "A Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste", and we had a serious lack of Neil Diamond: Fugazi, MM Bosstones, Ministry, NIN, Rollins Band, Primus, Ween (The Pod), Nirvana Typical straight white male stuff for Spring '93 I saw The Swirlies perform in the basement of a house, along with The Iowa Beef Experience.

I had to blow some dust off the tapes to help jog my memory, but: Even back int the day I was both poor and cheap and never bought anything. (Is anyone surprised at all?) But these were the kind of tapes I owned: Indigo Girls Suzanne Vega Liz Phair The Specials The local UNH hippie bands: Thanks to Gravity, and what was the name of the other one? PS-- I never was a music buyer, but went to a lot of live shows.

Posted by pamsterdam on 2008-04-29 12:55:15 +0000
Pondering Judd. My roommate had a "thing" with the really hairy guy. No, the REALLY hairy guy. Waking up to see him - in all his glory - lying on her bed one morning nearly scarred me for life. Or maybe you mean Percy Hill? With the stuttering lead singer? Jeremy. Sweet guy. The band was named after his grandfather. But, um, I hate hippies. Honest. Hate 'em. :o) (I used to tape all my music for free in WUNH's production studio)

Posted by G lib on 2008-04-29 13:01:36 +0000
I don't know if I ever saw Pondering Judd. It was Percy Hill I was talking about. And Jeremy-- one of the sweetest. I had a hardcore crush on him. And about the hippies-- I think, Pamsterdam, you need to take a long, hard, honest look at yourself, you doobie smoking vegetarian Amsterdam resider. (but you DO shower-- that's a difference)

Posted by pamsterdam on 2008-04-29 13:06:35 +0000
If John Lydon ever sees this thread, my chances with him are totally blown. JOHNNY!!!!!!!! (I shower a LOT.)

OMG, Pondering Judd are still around! It's not too late for you to see them...

Posted by pamsterdam on 2008-04-29 13:11:34 +0000
Oh, and this Wikipedia article reminded me that Tom from Percy Hill lived in my dorm and voted for Perot. Bad Brains boy & I took great pleasure in thanking him for his vote "for Clinton". Ah, back in the heady days when I felt like a single vote made a difference...

I forgot how much Mighty Mighty Bosstones I listened to that year. The first 9 months of 93 I worked the 6AM-2PM shift at a diner. The "Where'd You Go?" and "Ska-Core, The Devil & More" EPs were in constant rotation. "Do Something Crazy" went on _every_day_ at 2 as my heading for home theme song.

Posted by tgl on 2008-04-29 14:07:03 +0000
I certainly went overboard on Devil's Night Out. Which I owned on a dupe tape... sometime when I'm 65 I'll spend $500 to buy the LP. I must have brought a cache of tapes to school, with a Walkman(tm).

So, my freshman year my parents bought me a mini-fridge for my dorm room. I put a few especially "meaningful" stickers on it and bought a Dr Pepper magnet/bottle opener at the 7-11. The magnet has been on every fridge I've used since, but the mini-fridge I donated to my co-workers at the UNH library when I moved to Boston 6 years later, in 1997. I just got Facebook-friended by one of those co-workers, who sent me this: Bizarre. I wonder what he keeps in it... presumably not $3.99 fruit-flavored sparkling wine and day-old DHOP pizza.
