As of Thursday morning, I have a new nephew! 8lbs 6oz 20". They're home now, and everyone's doing well. The bris is probably next Thursday...when he'll get his name, and give a little skin.

L'chaim!

That'll be at the bris! Hopefully the little fella will be nice and drunk.

His name is Benyamin Barak and will be known as Benny. Everything went well...and quickly at the bris this morning. I held him for a while while he slept, after the crowd dispersed. Such a sweetheart! He looks like one of those life-like dolls.

'Everything went well at the bris'
Wow

We did not have a bris for my son, but The Pants is still traumatized from the circumcision.
Posted by ConorClockwise on 2008-05-01 19:15:29 +0000
And your son isn't?! :)
Posted by ConorClockwise on 2008-05-01 19:16:16 +0000
Actually you never said he wasn't...
Posted by tendiamonds on 2008-05-01 19:28:29 +0000
I say he isn't, The Pants isn't so sure...

I'm sure all his future girlfriends will thank you.

Really?

(sorry for the double-post, I guess I was in shock)

How so? In many cultures the practice of fgm is analogous to male circumcision both physically and symbolically, particularly in cultures where circumcision (male and female) is done ritually at puberty to signify the change from child to adult.
Posted by tendiamonds on 2008-05-02 16:54:35 +0000
For the culture that Miriam and I share, circumcision as well as many other religious laws (such as the kashrut) are dictated from a word of God perspective, but are rooted in healthy behavior. It may no longer be true that a circumcised penis is cleaner than an uncut one, but it sure as shit was when the Torah was written.
Is there a historical perspective that suggests that FGM was ever done for health reasons?

As you point out, circumcision is not presented in the Torah as being for health reasons, rather it is a sign of literal bodily sacrifice renewing God's covenant with the Israelites in each male individual (Genesis 17, Lech Lecha, 7th reading). While moderns may construe that circumcision was *really* done for health reasons, that argument is considerably more contested than you make it out be, both in the case of circumcision and in the case of Kashrut.
That Judaism does not have an analogous practice for women does not mean that circumcision is not analogous to fgm.

Contested or not, the argument can be made.
Can the argument be made for FGM. Believe it or not, can you make it?

It is my understand that genital mutilation (male or female) was generally done for health reasons.
Anything that hinders desire or pleasure of sex will limit the spread of disease, yet people still must be able to have children.
Posted by tendiamonds on 2008-05-02 18:28:47 +0000
That's not the health reason I'm talking about. I'm talking about cleanliness. But, nevertheless, however absurd, you make the argument, therefore, whatever.
Posted by ConorClockwise on 2008-05-02 18:56:50 +0000
Agreed. The arguments for circumcision are absurd.

Except that you have such a cute penis.
It looks just like mahatma chani.

A[0] is able to say "I was at The Milky Way when the high score was set by the lead singer of The Stoves."
I can't remember his name (the singer's) right now... instead of listening to "Sox Talk" during the rain delay, I should be listening to The Stoves.
...A[0] might also want to mention he witnessed someone's wedding, but, first things first.

Kyle Sinclair (sp?)
To this day A[0] says "Tommy and M got married" whenever we mention tommy or weddings. (of course, he rosettas M)

Kyle. I was thinking "Kenny". Close.
