A-Roid
I'm shocked there has been no RS discussions on the report that Alex Rodriguez tested positive for 'Roids, even though it was pretty much assumed that even though he is an asshole, he was a clean asshole. Now discuss damnit!

He's a dirty asshole - the story speaks for itself.

There was a time when I was pleased Bonds' HR record would stand for only a few years, because has it wrapped up if he really wants it. Now I don't care who has the HR record. It's like watching the 'World's Strongest Man' competion or professional wrestling; it's a ridiculous title.

A-Rod's steroid use (as well as the as-of-yet-unnamed 103 other players who tested positive) is horrible for baseball.
The implications of this go far beyond taunts and headlines.

I am glad he admits it. It is maybe worse for baseball that he does. Now there isn't a "spectre" of sterdoids, there is fact. The future top 2 HR kings are dirty!

It's baseball. Maybe a problem for the statisticians and those who want to argue over "greatest ever". However, the game survived the Black Sox, it'll survive this. If I took steroids, I still couldn't hit a curveball. It's bad news for Rodriguez, but there will still be 50 million tickets sold for MLB games this year.

Yeah, I think if anything, A-Fraud's confession is only going to push steroids into the realm of being more acceptable in baseball and other sports, unfortunately. If it weren't for the kids, MLB wouldn't care as much about keeping all of this a secret.

I disagree, I think his confession signals that this stuff is unacceptable. The ballplayers that have been denying (and Giambi... what an ass) steroid use are the ones signaling "this is *wink* bad, just don't get caught".
I guess Rodriguez wouldn't be apologizing if he didn't get caught, but, I think his confession is a good thing. Better than continued silence or denial.
Steroid use by police officers is a much bigger problem.

Unacceptable to whom? Steroids are "performance enhancing" and for MLB "enhanced performance" = $$$. I don't think for a moment that MLB wants steroids gone from the game, despite what they may say. This is a show for the kids.

I see your point. Since I view MLB as the ultimate expression of free market capitalism in sports, I don't have too much of a problem with players seeking out every advantage they can.

Sure, but the players that HAVE confessed thus far -- Giambi, Pettite -- have continued on with some modicum of business as usual. A-Rod didn't have any choice -- either confess or become Pete Rose/Bonds/Clemens. I'm not sure this will be taken as "steroid use is okay" -- hopefully it'll be "steroids are something that USED TO happen."

"If I took steroids, I still couldn't hit a curveball."
That's a header.

I'd be so happy if what you're hopeful about becomes reality, and an anti-steroid culture takes root in pro sports. I'm looking at this mostly through the $$$ lens. If the players were penalized through serious financial repercussions for steroid use, I'd take the anti-steroid talk in MLB more seriously.

Hey respectless - the Sun Ra Fagen in yr blog's subtitle = A+
Saw Bob Costas interview w/ the journalist that wrote the new A-roid book - in high school, within a span of 6 months the humble subject of this thread went from benching less than 100 lbs to 300 lbs.
