Progressive Republicans are now Democrats

http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2004/0410.wallace-wells.html It reminds me of the switch the parties did on Civil Rights in the 60's.

I was just going to post a topic like this. Mostly, I was thinking that your typical party labels are meaning less and less. Tax-and-spend Democrats are harder to find. Republicans that abhore the use of government to police a persons private life even harder. Just finished watching the latest "American Experience" on RFK. It was a little shocking to hear LBJ express the need to have a "liberal like Robert Kennedy" in the Senate, then to hear the crowd cheer. One of the things that struck me about RFK was how at the beginning of his career, he was a staunch a Cold Warrior. He worked with Sen. McCarthy for instance. His initial support of the Vietnam War was total. Grounded in the belief that Communism in Vietnam must be stopped or all of Southeast Asia would fall. I'm not sure the parties really did switch in the '60s. I don't think either party was ready to embrace the Civil Rights movement. It was RFK that awakened to the reality of the South (when his aide got beaten while rushing to the scene of the Freedom Riders arrival in Montongomery) and then prodded JFK with moving on the Civil RIghts Act. JFK wasn't really interested in Civil Rights until shoved by his brother.

That's a great article. Bush is the new Mondale. Brilliant.

I know you're probably busy at work, but these are interesting, thought provoking articles. They aren't claiming that liberals are consevatives or that Kerry has a lock on moderate Republicans. The Republicans have seriously muddied their principles by jumping into bed with Big Business and Big Religion. I'm sure there are similar articles out there on what is wrong with the Democratic Party.
