Interesting side issue presented on ABC news this AM: Time, and other media outlets are covering this with a HIGH amount of reluctance. The ever increasing role that the internet plays in how people receive their news. There are good points and bad points to this. good: the press becomes more free: if there is some kind of bias or supression of what real news is, the internet provides a forum for people to discuss this information to make sure that 'the truth is out there'. Bad: anyone with a computer, a blog, and an axe to grind can make trivial stories that have no consequence in the outcome of the election (or any legitimacy for hard news for that matter). Also bad because when the rumors circulate to a fervent pitch, the major media (NYT for example) then need to report on it because a lot of people are talking about it. If a miniscule 'bulge' is all you can see and there are no other details behind it to back your story up - why is it news?

"If a miniscule 'bulge' is all you can see and there are no other details behind it to back your story up - why is it news?" If this were true, it would not be news. Read the NYTimes piece. The reason it is news worthy is that the White house first charged the pictures were doctored, and now they are saying it was a rectangular rumpling in the fabric. Classic. I also find it interesting as Kerry got skewered by the Drudge report for taking out a "cheat sheet" http://www.drudgereportarchives.com/data/2004/10/04/20041004_132002_dnc57.htm

I really don't think the switch in denials is the news. It's the bulge, stupid! The internet fed this story, just like it fed the "Rathergate" story. Thousands of bloggers can't be wrong...

If you think the White House is genuinely lying to you because it first said (in the words of the NYT) "Might" have been doctored, and then white House referred to it as abulge, I can certainly understand and appreciate that - there are 2 different stories being told here. I personally dont think the 2 different stories are a result of someone trying to pull the wool over our eyes. As a fervent news consumer, I appreciate more details being provided in stories such as this. If - and this is a big if - there turns out to be any merit to this story, much more empirical proof will be needed to convince this curmudgeon that there was nay foul play / ill will / cheating involved in a rumple in a man's suit jacket. C'mon - do you think Bush's advisors, press secretaries, and other people in his camp would allow him to go on TV with a visible bulge on his jacket if they had any idea people would cry foul and accuse him of wearing a wire? I If Karl Rove did set him up with a wire - and this also is a big if - wouldn't it be more cunning and stealth? Given the past articles / postings that have been shared w/ me about Rove here on Rideside, I am led to believe from our posters' arguments that he is a dangerous, sinister man who serves as Bush's brain - don't you think he would have a less obvious way of purposefully disenfranchising the American public? Just my 2 cents...

BC04 campaign did try to stipulate that no "frombee" shots would be taken. Desperate times call for desperate measures... The NYT article was way skimpy compared with the slate.com "source". I really don't know what to think. You can't make this shit up though, amazing.

Posted by tgl on 2004-10-11 19:36:11 +0000
"you can't make this shit up" Obviously, the story _could_ be made up. I mean that the NYT along with other mainstream media (MSM) would be reporting on whether or not the President wore a radio during a debate.

Receiving transmission...

I DO think that the man would wear a wire, because a brotha needs help.

Posted by rladew on 2004-10-12 11:57:20 +0000
but my point is what we think he would do shouldn't necessarily be news. What he does do is a little more important.

Posted by dawnbixtler on 2004-10-12 14:17:32 +0000
He did wear a wire...

Posted by tgl on 2004-10-12 14:20:44 +0000
It's plausible it was a wrinkle. What is the simplest answer? This story is based on so much conjecture... I'm highly skeptical. I wouldn't be surprised if he did have a wire, though.

I really can appreciate the suspicion. I understand and respect the need to question our leaders. But I also feel like none of this is based on substance. I know Terry got rid of the "OH snap" button some time ago - in my world of bulletin boards I think I'd have to put a "Prove It!!!" Button In. Our emotions and suspicions dont always (or EVER for that matter) reflect reality. I think the Bard once said "Nothing Is, but Thinking Makes It So"......

The photo and the republican flip-flop remain compelling enough to me so that I think the dude was wearing a wire.

Posted by rladew on 2004-10-12 17:21:48 +0000
But does it belong in the NYT?

Posted by dawnbixtler on 2004-10-12 17:39:20 +0000
Yes, because the White House is lying about it...

Posted by rladew on 2004-10-12 17:52:23 +0000
ok. got the point.

Posted by tgl on 2004-10-12 19:43:09 +0000
What are they lying about? It could be a photoshopped photo. It could be a wrinkle in jacket. These are both just a plausible as a microwave radio unit.

Posted by rladew on 2004-10-12 20:17:31 +0000
no way Terry! the White House told us two different things and Bush looks stupid and foolish! Obviously he cant think for himself - It must be Karl Rove!
