Whats up with the dipped in shit look that the Red Sox favor? Is this a superstitous / beatitude type of thing?
I noticed it last year, but didn't have any hard core Sox fans to ask. Thought you guys might know.

It's pine tar... the helmet is a easy place to reach and get a little on your gloves (or hands if your name is Mirabelli or Mientkiewicz) which helps you grip the bat. I think it started with a couple of guys having just a little and then some guys got fined and appealed and it's become a bit of a joke... "Hey guys, look how much pine tar I have up here!"
